Hughes Honed New Pitch in Summer

TORONTO — Phil Hughes will start for the Yankees for the eighth and
final time this season on Wednesday, and if he earns his first victory,
it would be nothing more than a consolation prize. Having one victory
or none will not make much difference in how he remembers a lost year.

“It would be nice, but at the same time, I don’t think one win is
really what I expected out of myself or anybody else expected,”
said Hughes, who threw four innings in a no-decision last Wednesday.
“I think it will still be, definitely, a negative year.”

But Hughes, 22, went on to say that it was not a total loss. While
recovering from a fractured rib he sustained at the end of April,
Hughes had a summer to work on developing a cutter.

He threw a slider in high school, but shelved it when the Yankees
encouraged him to throw curveballs instead. This pitch is harder
than his old slider, Hughes said, and he adds it to a repertory of
fastball, curveball and changeup.

“When you’re asked to go through a lineup as a starter three or
four times, you need different looks,” Manager Joe Girardi said.
“There are very few guys that can do it with two pitches. You can
do it with three and, if you have four, it’s real important. Sometimes
adding a pitch is a pitch that can get you over the top. He throws a lot
of strikes with it.”

Hughes, who is 0-4 with a 7.96 earned run average, will continue refining
his pitches next month as he builds up innings in the Arizona Fall League.
His injury has limited him to just 61 2/3 professional innings this season,
but Hughes said he hoped that with six weeks in Arizona he could push that
total over 100.

HANK HAS OPINIONS The former Yankees manager Joe Torre was not mentioned
during Sunday’s ceremony for the closing of Yankee Stadium, and on
Tuesday his new team, the Dodgers, took a more direct swipe from the
Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner.

Steinbrenner was not present Sunday and attended no more than three

Declaring that “The A.L. East is never weak,” Steinbrenner said
his biggest problem is the divisional setup. The Yankees started
play Tuesday with an 85-71 record, four games better than Torre’s
Dodgers in the National League West. Yet Torre is in first place and
the Yankees are far from a playoff spot.

Steinbrenner cited the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals, who won just 83 games
in the regular season but rallied in October to win the World Series.

“People will say the Cardinals were the best team because they won
the World Series,” Steinbrenner wrote. “Well, no, they weren’t.

It is worth noting that the Yankees’ last championship team, in 2000,
won only 87 games in the regular season but qualified for the playoffs
because there was nobody better in the A.L. East. The second-place team
in the Central that season, the Cleveland Indians, won 90 games but
missed the playoffs.

但洋基在2000年最後一次拿冠軍時，在例行賽只贏了87場，但進季後賽，只是因為

Yankees’ 1998 championship team for a reunion on Nov. 7 at his
annual Safe At Home Foundation gala, to be held at Chelsea Piers.

Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch, Scott Brosius, David Cone,
Paul O’Neill, David Wells and Homer Bush are scheduled to attend.

MATSUI’S SURGERY GOES WELL According to Joe Girardi, Hideki
Matsui’s surgery on his left knee was completed without
complications on Monday. Matsui had an operation on his right
knee last Nov. 14, and he said Sunday that he would benefit
from having this operation earlier.

“First of all, it’s the same procedure I had on my right knee,
and I have a month and a half or two months of a head start,”
Matsui said through an interpreter. “I think I’ll be in much better
condition that I was when I came in this spring.”

Matsui played only 21 games in left field this season and 66 as
the designated hitter, but Girardi said he expected him to have
no restrictions next season.

FINAL STADIUM ARRESTS Eighteen people were arrested at Yankee
Stadium on Sunday for criminal mischief or possession of stolen
property, the police said Tuesday. Two others were arrested for
running on the field. “So far, we don’t think anything
significant was stolen but we are still checking,” Lonn A. Trost,
the Yankees’ chief operating officer, said.
