Andy Pettitte is shut down.

Whether it's for good remains to be seen.

The Yankees announced Wednesday that Pettitte, whose left shoulder has
been bothering him for at least a month, will not pitch again this season.

"I've thrown enough innings," Pettitte said before Wednesday night's
6-2, 10-inning victory over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, a game
won on a Bobby Abreu grand slam. "There's not any sense in going out
and continue to kill myself now or push myself through anything."

Sidney Ponson will start Saturday at Boston in Pettitte's place.

Pettitte, 36, revealed that he underwent an MRI during the final homestand
and that it showed tendinitis in his shoulder, which needs rest.

The next step for him will be deciding his future.

Pettitte doesn't want to play anywhere else but said he needs time to
make a decision whether to return or retire, although he plans to come
to a conclusion sooner than he did the past two winters.

"I just need to get away for a little while," he said. "I don't want to
drag it out. ... They've pretty much let it be known to me they'd like
to have me back and it's up to me."

The Yankees are expected to revamp their rotation over the winter, and
A.J. Burnett could be a target. Wednesday night Burnett struck out 11 in
eight innings for Toronto and earned a curtain call from the fans who knew
it might be his last Blue Jays start, since he can opt out of his contract.

Phil Hughes was also good, allowing two runs on five hits in a career-high
eight innings (100 pitches) for the Yankees. But he got a no-decision,
leaving him winless (0-4) for the year despite opening the season in the
rotation.

The Yankees are the third team -- the first with a winning record -- to
have two pitchers go winless while making eight or more starts: Hughes,
whose season was derailed by a fractured rib, and Ian Kennedy.

Pettitte, who finishes 14-14, is one of seven pitchers to throw 200 innings
every season over the past four years, and the only one older than 32. He
had 204 this year.

In his past 11 starts, as his velocity decreased and his cut fastball
suffered, Pettitte went 2-7 with a 6.23 ERA and .323 batting average allowed.

"It's given me a little bit of trouble" was all he would say about his
shoulder.

"I just think I pitched terrible," he said. "I feel like everybody pitched
really well, other than me, down the stretch."

Only three pitchers have had a .500 or better record (15 or more starts)
in each of their first 14 seasons: Pettitte, Cy Young (1890-1903) and
Tom Seaver (1967-80).

Before the Yankees decide what to do with Pettitte or anyone else this
winter, they need to have a general manager in place.

Brian Cashman said Wednesday by phone that he had no plans to go to Tampa,
Fla., to meet with ownership. But he sure talks like someone who wants to
continue as GM.

"We're not there yet," said Cashman, reflecting on the transition he
started three years ago, "but there's progress that has been made.

"There's still work to be done."

Will Cashman be doing it?

"Right now I can't really talk about it," Cashman said of his status. As
a result, he said he can't discuss what the Yankees need to do this
offseason "right at this moment."

Cashman's three-year deal that included increased authority expires
Oct. 31. The Steinbrenner family wants Cashman to stay, but some in
baseball believe the Seattle Mariners' GM job is Cashman's for the
taking, and Cashman might want to look into it.

Then again, Seattle promises to be a major rebuilding project.

Manager Joe Girardi praised his relationship with Cashman.

"I'm under the assumption that he's still going to be here," Girardi said.
 "That's my personal assumption. I'm not speaking for him.

"When I signed (a three-year contract), I was under the assumption, in
my mind, that he was going to be here the whole time I was."

Cashman didn't say missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993 was
acceptable, but he indicated it was in part a consequence of his desire
to build an organization that develops more of its own players.

"You're seeing a market correction on Wall Street," he said. "And you're
seeing a market correction taking place in our organization the past
few years.

"A year like this is coming at some point, no matter what."

Notes: Mike Mussina, struck Tuesday on the outside of his right elbow by a
liner, played catch Wednesday and is determined to start Sunday at Boston
in pursuit of his first 20-win season. "Unless I get hurt in the training
room between now and then," Mussina said. ...

The Yankees extended their player-development contract with Double-A Trenton
through 2014. ...

As a result of being eliminated from postseason play, the Yankees held
Derek Jeter (sore left hand), Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon out of the
lineup. Girardi said he wants to look at some younger players over the
final five games, including first baseman Juan Miranda, who played Wednesday
night, and catcher Francisco Cervelli.
