Yankees' Mariano Rivera had shoulder examined today

TORONTO –

Not surprisingly, Mariano Rivera didn't say a peep until the Yankees had
been mathematically eliminated.

sore shoulder.

As a result, the team sent Rivera back to New York for an MRI Thursday,
since one can never be too careful with a $45 million asset. Results of
the exam were not available Thursday.

While manager Joe Girardi insisted Rivera, who turns 39 on Nov. 29,
was only completing his season-ending physical, general manager
Brian Cashman revealed the specific issue.

"He had been pitching with some discomfort in his shoulder," Cashman said
Thursday by phone. "He didn't say anything until after we had been
eliminated (Tuesday). Once he brought it to our attention, we said,

Rivera pitched three straight days, Friday through Sunday, and then
again Tuesday. There were no warning flags in those games, as he
allowed two hits, walked none and struck out three in four scoreless
innings.

"It doesn't seem like it's major," Cashman said. "Just because of who

Even so, any issue with Rivera is significant because of his importance
to the team.

as Rivera, who is in the first season of a three-year, $45 million contract
extension.

best in the AL since Tom Gordon of the Red Sox in 1998 (46-of-47).

third-best since 1901 for any pitcher with 50 or more innings,
behind only Dennis Eckersley's 1989 and 1990 seasons.

During a two-week span, Aug. 30-Sept. 12, Rivera pitched just once. But
that seemed to be more because of a lack of save chances than a physical
problem -- at least, that's how it was presented at the time.

Rivera doesn't seem at all overworked. His 69 1/3 innings pitched are
his fewest since 2002 (when he made three trips to the disabled list).

Of Rivera's 63 appearances, 14 have been for more than one inning --

Rivera's last significant physical issue was in 2006, when a strained
muscle in his forearm caused the Yankees to shut him down for the first
three weeks of September.

Girardi said he expects Rivera to rejoin the team Friday in Boston.
Girardi also downplayed Rivera's absence, calling it "just a physical."

In the 39 games this year Rivera entered with a save opportunity,
he has a 0.64 ERA with just 20 hits allowed, three walks and 47
strikeouts in 42 innings.

Rivera this year moved into second place all time in saves, with 481.
He has 11 seasons with 30 or more saves, second only to all-time saves

In the postseason, Rivera has a record 34 saves (Eckersley is second with 15)

career 0.38 ERA in Division Series games.
