Where are you Brian Cashman?

That crafty Brian Cashman blew off his meeting with the New York writers
today. According to an e-mail from the Yankees, “Unfortunately Brian is
off hotel property and unavailble for the rest of the evening. This was not
scheduled and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

This means one of two things:

1. Cashman is having dinner someplace nice with an agent.

2. He’s out looking for who killed Tupac.

I’ll go with door No. 1. Once we learn the particulars, we’ll let you
know.

他因為一個臨時的聚會而不會在飯店裡，不能和他們見面....

Cashman in San Francisco with CC

Brian Cashman is meeting with CC Sabathia in the San Francisco area tonight.
It was a last-minute meeting, not sure who requested it, but a number of
sources have confirmed the meeting to Newsday.

This appears to be a good sign for the Yankees, as Cashman is meeting with
Sabathia for the third time in three days. One reason for this meeting may
be for Sabathia's wife, Amber, to get to talk to Cashman. She is a major part
of this decision-making process.

Wow. A baseball official familiar with Cashman's activities just confirmed
to me that the other meeting Cashman is attending tonight is
"Sabathia-related." This person doesn't know for sure whether the meeting
is with Sabathia, with Sabathia's agent or what. The person speculated
that it could be a meeting with Sabathia and his wife, who is said to be
more strongly opposed than Sabathia himself about moving across the country
to New York. Newsday is reporting that the Cashman-Sabathia
meeting is occurring in California. I don't have that confirmed yet, but
I don't have any reason to doubt Newsday's reporting either.

If Cashman is meeting with Sabathia, that could be a good sign for the
Yankees, who have been increasingly pessimistic in recent days about their
chances of signing Sabathia. One Yankee person said to me today, "If he
doesn't want to be here, I don't want him." But that's just one sour-grapey
opinion. The Yankees as an organization want Sabathia very badly, and
Cashman is putting on a full-court pressing, meeting with Sabathia for
the third time in three days.

OK, I think I have it now. Cashman did leave the hotel to meet with
Burnett. But that's not the only meeting he has tonight. The person
referenced in my first update, when I asked whether Cashman was meeting
with Burnett, wrote back, "I think you need to pursue other ideas as well."
Guess I took that "as well" to mean "instead." So initial post was correct,
if incomplete, when it said Cashman was meeting with Burnett. Who else is he
meeting with? Not sure. Could be Lowe, Teixeira. Still working on it.

UPDATE (8:57 pm): --跟 Derek Lowe

A person familiar with the situation just told me the Cashman meeting may
not be with Burnett after all. Another person suggested the meeting was
with Derek Lowe, adding that it was definitely not with Sabathia or Sheets.
I'll keep at it, folks. We'll get this yet.

We were recently informed that Yankees GM Brian Cashman will not be meeting
with the media this evening because he has left the Bellagio for a meeting
that was scheduled at the last minute. A person close to the situation, who
declined to be identified because he is not authorized to speak for Cashman,
said the meeting was almost certainly with free-agent right-hander A.J.
Burnett.

Earlier today, Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, said he expected to meet
with the Yankees soon. Burnett is also drawing serious interest from the
Braves and Red Sox, but he has emerged as a Yankee priority in recent days
due to growing pessimism among Yankee decision-makers about the team's
chances to sign top target CC Sabathia.

The Yankees offered Sabathia six years and $140 million nearly four weeks
ago, but he's still waiting for expected offers from the Giants and Angels,
since his preference would be to play in California. Signing Burnett
 (or any other free agent pitcher, such as Derek Lowe or Ben Sheets) would
NOT preclude a Sabathia signing. The Yankees still want Sabathia most of all
and are content to wait for him to make his decision, however long that
takes.
