Live from Tampa, Fla. Anthony Rieber filed this blog from Tampa. More to come all day. *** It's 9:30 a..m. on a glorious 70-degree day at the Yankees' minor-league complex in Tampa. Reporters and photographers from Newsday, the Daily News, the Post and the AP are here awaiting any players who are coming to work out. We don't want to ask them about the weather. We want to ask them about A-Rod and steroids. Right now, Jorge Posada is playing catch in the outfield. Wonder how his shoulder is? Actually, no, I don't, not today. There will be plenty of time for that later. The captain, Derek Jeter, just showed up. His wearing shorts. He too is playing catch in the outfield. When the players are done with their workout -- batting practice will likely follow -- hopefully we'll get to interview them. I also have a handy Newsday.com video camera that was delivered to me at JFK last night by another intrepid Newsday reporter who may wish to remain nameless. Wanna guess who it was? So later we'll have more blog posts, breathlessly updated stories, and, if all goes well, video. Keep checking here all day today. UPDATE (10:47 a.m.) Nick Swisher arrived a few minutes ago and is taking BP with Jeter, Posada, Brett Gardner and one other player. Remember Swisher? Wonder how he felt the day the Yankees signed Teixeira. Posada just told reporters, "I've got to go do something. I'll be right back." Posada is one of the rare athletes who isn't lying when he says that. He probably will come back. He and Jeter are veterans of this stuff. Now the players are going through some infield practice, Jeter at short throwing to Swisher at first. On an adjacent field, pitchers are warming up their arms. That includes Chien-Ming Wang, who I saw jogging a few minutes ago. UPDATE (11:05 a.m.) Jeter to reporters: "Nah, I'm not talking today." He was smiling. "I'll be back," he said. UPDATE (11:39 a.m.) Derek Jeter said "you have to give him the benefit of the doubt" when asked about the report claiming Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003. Jeter also expressed dismay that a supposedly anonymous test result became public. Speaking at the Yankees' minor-league complex on a gorgeous 70-degree morning, the Yankees captan would not say if he talked to Rodriguez and cautioned people to wait for A-Rod to give his side of the story before drawing any conclusions. "My intitial reaction is let him respond," Jeter said. "Give him the respect to respond to it before you pass judgment." Jeter said he was shocked when he first heard the reports, "Just like everybody was shocked." Of the test results becoming public knowledge when players were assured they would remain confidential, Jeter said: "It's a learning process for me. You'd have to say an anonymous test is supposed to be anonymous." Knowing there are still 103 players from 2003 who failed tests and are on that list, does Jeter worry his name might be on it? "Why would I worry about me being on the list?" he said. UPDATE (12:28 p.m.) Well, it looks like Posada may have been overly optimistic when he said he would come back and talk to us. It looks like the major league players have left for the day and now the minor leaguers who were taking BP and stuff are leaving too. If anything changes, I'll let you know. UPDATE (12:41 p.m.) Jorge Posada, also working out in Tampa, was supportive of Rodriguez: "Alex is my teammate and is going to be my friend forever. I'm going to support him any way I can. ... "It's going to be a tough spring training for Alex, but as soon as he talks about it, whatever he's going to do or say, put it behind him as soon as he can." Asked if he felt the report would taint A-Rod's accomplishments, Posada said, "We'll see." UPDATE (2:45 p.m.): Posada said he threw about 140 times in the outfield. I saw him do that drill where you throw a bunch, then step back a few yards and throw more, etc. He said he hopes to be ready for Opening Day, but he didn't sound 100 percent sure. Yankees fans should hope he doesn't rush and hurt himself just to make it back by April 6. Posada can be stubborn about injuries; it was only a year ago that he first hurt his shoulder in spring training. He said it was no big deal. Diane: I'm glad you got the feeling of spring in what I wrote. It certainly felt good to be out of New York and watching baseball players on a warm spring day. Those of you who have read me before know I have never complained about my job -- today especially was a nice day to be a sports writer (although Mrs. Rieber wasn't too thrilled when I got the call Sunday to come down here immediately and for an indefinite period. Thanks, boss and thanks, A-Rod.) I shot a lot of video of Posada, Jeter, a little Nick Swisher. We are going to put it up on Newsday.com as soon as we can. Keep an eye out for it. Oh, and to those of you who rail against our going all-out to cover the A-Rod stuff: Don't waste your breath. Try to understand that while you may only care about Posada's shoulder, the CF battle, etc., there is a larger world outside your Yankee fandom. People who have no interest in baseball know who Alex Rodriguez is, and the facts are that every system of measurement shows controversial stories such as this one draw in more viewers, readers, commenters, etc. So what are we supposed to do? Ignore the story that we can prove more people are interested in because it's sensational? But I knew some of you would get annoyed when I said I was going to ask Posada about A-Rod and not his shoulder. Y'all make it too easy sometimes. (Jim A. knows what I'm talking about.) I'm just sorry Mike Rose had to take the slings and arrows! Serves him right for forgetting to put my name on this blog initially. For the record, of the five reporters present, I was the only one to ask Posada about his shoulder. I have video of him throwing and of him talking. We are planning to run a story on that tomorrow, just as soon as I get a chance to write it. So who takes care of you? That's it from Tampa today. Check back tomorrow for more. scarad:有機會還是練一下跑壘吧 = ="" 02/10 13:48
