Sabathia struggles, but Yankees aren't worried

LAKELAND, Fla. - When Joba Chamberlain took the mound on Tuesday night,
Yankees manager Joe Girardi noticed that his other four starting pitchers
were on the top step of the dugout, shouting encouragement.

CC Sabathia was the man who helped give his fellow starters a nudge,
telling them Chamberlain needed some support after a couple of rough
outings early in spring training. So there he was, perched on the
railing with A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang.

CC告訴其他幾位先發投手說，因為幾次不好的先發，Joba需要一點支持。
所以Joba先發時，CC, AJ, Andy和王建民都站在那裡看。

"I like to watch the game from there. I was there talking to A.J. I know
guys feel that support when you're there and watching them pitch," Sabathia
said.

「我喜歡站在那裡看球，我跟AJ在那裡聊天。我知道當你站在那裡時，

Sabathia could have used a pat on the back himself yesterday after he
allowed five runs over 1 2/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers. After
getting through the first inning, he gave up six hits in the second
inning, including a long two-run home run by Gary Sheffield.

"I felt like I was throwing the ball pretty good. They just put the bat
on the ball. They squared up some balls and started going first to third
on me and it kind of snowballed," Sabathia said.

"You definitely have to think about it. That was a big inning, and I
didn't get out of the second inning. I'll go out and continue to keep
working."

The Yankees weren't concerned. They signed Sabathia to an eight-year,
$161 million contract because of his powerful left arm and durability.
They also got a player who will take the extra step to foster team
unity as part of the deal.

洋基也不是太擔心。他們簽下Sabathia八年，161million的合約，是因為他的表現。
但他們也因此得到一個會盡力讓球隊氣氛和諧團結的球員。

"CC's a tremendous guy," Chamberlain said. "From the day he signed, he was
in contact with a lot of us and talking about the season. He's reached out
to everybody in spring training."

When the Yankees started looking into Sabathia last fall after he became
a free agent, Girardi placed a few telephone calls to friends in the game
to try to get a feel for what kind of person the pitcher was.

"I heard he was an awesome teammate. That was one of the things," Girardi
said. "Everyone you asked about him (said), 'Great teammate, great in the
clubhouse. You're going to love him.' That's one of the things that made
him so attractive."

Tuesday's subtle show of support of Chamberlain was something Girardi
appreciated. Building more togetherness has been one of the manager's
goals this season.

"It was enjoyable to watch from my standpoint and I think it's important
to our team and I think CC is a big part of that," Girardi said. "He's a
cohesive guy."

大一部份，他是個有凝聚性的人」

Sabathia has invited several teammates to attend Orlando Magic games with
him. He also had Nick Swisher come to his place for dinner. Sometimes it's
nothing more than pulling up a chair in front of Andy Pettitte's locker
and having a talk.

CC邀請幾位隊友去看魔術的比賽，也和Nick Swisher到他家一起用餐。有時他就只是
拉張椅子到Andy的locker前跟他聊天。

"That's part of who I am. I didn't try to come in and be like (an) all
rah-rah guy," Sabathia said. "I like to hang out with my teammates, talk
to them and get to know them. That's who I am.

「這是我的個性，我不會只是個回答『rah-rah』的人，我喜歡跟我的隊友在一起，
跟他們聊天，了解他們，這就是我。」

"By the end of spring or the beginning of the year, I think we're going
to be a close-knit group. We're having a lot of fun with each other and
getting a chance to bounce things off each other."

「在春訓結束或球季開始之初，我想我們將會成為一個緊密的組織。我們彼此間
將會跟對方玩在一起，然後一起打鬧。」

Sabathia has even gotten to know Wang, the quietest player on the roster.

沙巴西亞也跟王建民有點熟，球隊上最安靜的人。


"He's actually pretty funny. He's a pretty good dude," Sabathia said.
"He'll chatter it up a little bit."

「其實他挺有趣的，他是個好人」沙巴西亞說，「他有時會一直說的不停。」

Reliever Brian Bruney said that after only a few weeks of knowing him,
he considers Sabathia a friend.

後援投手 Brian Bruney說只認識CC一個星期，他就認為CC是個朋友。

"Some guys keep to themselves and that's fine," Bruney said. "But CC has
a good way of bringing people together. I'm glad he's with us. It's going
to be a fun season."

「有些人比較內向，那也沒什麼，但是CC有辦法（就像是做橋樑地）讓人們聚在一起，
我很高興他跟我們同隊，今年將會是個有趣的一球季。」

Notes:

Mariano Rivera threw 30 pitches of batting practice to John Rodriguez and
Jesus Montero, allowing only two balls to be put in play but struggling to
throw strikes. Rivera will throw batting practice again Saturday and could
get in a game as soon as Monday or Tuesday. Rivera said his surgically
repaired right shoulder feels good. "I'm right where the doctor said I
would be. Everything is great," he said. "Every time I throw, it's
feeling better and better. I have no doubts." ...

MO進行了30球的打擊練習的投球工作，星期六會再進行一次，
然後最快星期一或星期二就可以進行春訓比賽。

With the Dominican Republic out of the World Baseball Classic, Robinson Cano
and Damaso Marte are expected back in camp tomorrow and will play Saturday.

隨著多明尼加在WBC被淘汰出局， Robinson Cano 與 Damaso Marte將在星期五歸隊，
可能星期六上場。
