Notes: Doubleheader forces moves
Farnsworth getting better; Clippard throws no-no for Trenton
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com
BOSTON -- With their bullpen drained following Friday's grueling day-night
doubleheader, the Yankees made a couple of roster moves to help get them
through the rest of the weekend at Fenway Park.
New York designated Sidney Ponson for assignment and optioned Brian Bruney to
Triple-A Columbus, taking both right-handers off the roster. To take their
place, the Yanks recalled right-hander Jeff Karstens and outfielder/first
baseman Aaron Guiel.
"We're beat up a little bit," manager Joe Torre said of the decision to bring
up one pitcher and one hitter. "We only had three guys [on the bench] because
of the doubleheader."
Ponson went 0-1 with a 10.47 ERA in five games (three starts) for the Yankees.
He was signed on July 14 to be the team's fifth starter, but was relegated to a
long-relief role after New York traded for Cory Lidle at the non-waiver trade
deadline.
Ponson started the second game of Friday's doubleheader, allowing seven runs in
three-plus innings.
"He did everything we asked him to do," Torre said. "Part of the deal coming
here was that he was going to be a starter, and he accepted staying on as a
reliever. He couldn't have been easier to deal with; unfortunately, we ran out
of time with what happened the last couple of days."
Bruney was recalled from Columbus on Thursday when Lidle was placed on the
bereavement list. Bruney appeared in two games, including a 1 2/3-inning
scoreless outing in the second game on Friday in which he threw 56 pitches.
"It's a strange thing for a manager to do, but when you have a doubleheader and
you need pitching, that's what you have to do," Torre said. "He certainly
understood; he gave us a very courageous outing last night. In all likelihood,
we'll see him in a couple of weeks anyway."
Karstens was 6-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 starts this season for Double-A Trenton
and is 5-5 with a 4.28 for Columbus. He started for Columbus on Tuesday, but
was pulled from the game after just 12 pitches, as the Yankees wanted to hold
him back in case they needed him to start Friday against the Red Sox.
"He's been doing real well; we were very close to bringing him to start last
night," Torre said. "I just decided that I'd rather go with the experience
rather than someone who had never been to Fenway. Gator likes him a lot, so
we'll get a look at him."
Karstens and Guiel received word around 1:30 a.m. ET that they were being
called up, and they flew to Boston first thing Saturday morning, arriving at
Fenway Park around 9:30 a.m.
"I was kind of shocked," Karstens said. "I didn't know what to think. I tried
to call my family, but half the people didn't believe me. The only person who
believed me was my best friend."
Kyle in question: Kyle Farnsworth, who was struck on the right leg by a Wily
Mo Pena line drive in the seventh inning on Friday night, will probably miss a
couple of days as a result of the injury, but it doesn't appear to be very
serious.
"He's pretty good right now; he's icing it and getting treatment, but it's
better than we could have hoped for at this point," Torre said. "We still don't
know how long that he'll be down, but watching him walk on the bus today
carrying his crutches was a nice sign."
Farnsworth and Ron Villone were not available out of the bullpen on Saturday,
while Torre said that Scott Proctor would "probably" not pitch in the game.
That left Jaret Wright, Octavio Dotel, Mike Myers, Karstens, T.J. Beam and
Mariano Rivera as the Yankees' available relievers for the game.
Baby Bomber: Right-hander Tyler Clippard threw the first no-hitter in Trenton
history on Thursday, blanking Harrisburg, 9-0. Clippard struck out nine and
walked four, winning his seventh straight game.
During that winning streak, which dates back to June 29, Clippard has compiled
a 2.00 ERA, striking out 72 hitters in 63 innings. He leads the Eastern League
with 155 strikeouts, and is just 13 away from setting a new franchise record.
After opening the season 2-9, Clippard is now 10-10.
"It is unbelievable," Clippard said. "An unforgettable night, something I will
always remember."
