Stottlemyre: I think it's time for me to go
Yankees pitching coach unlikely to return for 11th season
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- Mel Stottlemyre's days as the Yankees' pitching coach appear
to be over, as the 63-year-old said Wednesday that he is unlikely to return
for an 11th season on Joe Torre's staff.
Stottlemyre, who has taken a lot of criticism over the past few years, has
not ruled out the possibility of working for a Major League team in 2006
or beyond, but it won't be with the Yankees.
Mel Stottlemyre
"I think it's time for somebody new," Stottlemyre said. "I've been here
10 years, and they're probably going to want to make some changes anyway.
I'll help them out a little bit. This is one change they don't have to
make; I'll make it for them."
Following their fifth consecutive season without a World Series title, the
Yankees could make several changes this winter, including some in the front
office and on the coaching staff.
General manager Brian Cashman may leave after his contract expires at the
end of October, bench coach Joe Girardi is a candidate for at least two
managerial openings, and the rest of the coaching staff is on one-year
contracts that end on Oct. 31.
Stottlemyre, who has been Torre's pitching coach in each of his 10 seasons
in the Bronx, said that Monday night's Game 5 of the American League
Division Series "felt a little like" the end of his tenure in pinstripes.
Game 5
According to Stottlemyre, Torre hasn't tried to persuade him to return for
another year on his staff.
"I think Joe knows where I stand in my situation," he said. "Joe and I have
a relationship where that really doesn't happen. He understands my
feelings, I understand his pretty well, and I told him I didn't expect to
be back. This isn't a spur-of-the-moment decision."
"For 10 years, they've been a winning team, and Mel was a big part of it,"
said third base coach Luis Sojo. "It's going to be tough, but that's the
name of the game. You have to move on. We're going to miss him, that's
for sure."
Among the potential replacements for Stottlemyre are bullpen coach Neil
Allen, Triple-A Columbus pitching coach Gil Patterson, former Yankees
left-hander Ron Guidry, former Red Sox pitching coach and current Yankees
advance scout Joe Kerrigan, and Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone, though
he has denied having interest in the New York job in the past.
This season was one of the most challenging for Stottlemyre, who had to
handle 14 different starting pitchers throughout the year thanks to
injuries to Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, Chien-Ming Wang and
Mike Mussina.
"I actually enjoyed this year with all the problems we had," he said.
"It's been more work with more people, but it goes with the territory."
The Yankees made a late-season charge to capture their eighth consecutive
AL East title, a ride that Stottlemyre thoroughly enjoyed. That said, the
success the team had in August and September didn't override his decision,
which he made in late May.
"It's been real difficult the last month," Stottlemyre said. "I've really
enjoyed being here, seeing guys bust their tails. It's a difficult
decision, but I guess I didn't forget easily what went on over the course
of the year. I never wavered on my decision."
That Stottlemyre made his decision at the end of May should come as little
surprise, as the Yankees were struggling through tough times at 27-24,
standing in fourth place in the division.
New York closed out that month with three straight losses, including two
to the Red Sox and one to the Royals, who went on to sweep the Yankees
to kick off a dreadful 3-9 road trip through the Midwest.
On May 6, Steinbrenner told USA Today that he was not pleased with the
Yankees' performance, as the team had started out of the gates with an
11-19 record and stood nine games out of first place.
"I am concerned because time is getting shorter as each day goes by,"
Steinbrenner told the newspaper. "We've got to get better, that's for
sure. It's never too early. Pitching is my main concern."
Stottlemyre said that the constant criticism wore on him more this year
than it had in the past, primarily away from the field.
"I didn't let it interfere with the way I went about my job," he said.
"I felt I wasn't able to leave it at the ballpark as well as I had in
other years. I found that it affected me a little off the field. That's
what helped me make my decision."
When asked about the criticism, Stottlemyre was quick to point out that
not all of it was unwarranted.
"Sometimes the criticism was correct; sometimes we all need a wake-up call,
" he said. "I'm not saying it was always bad, but there were times that the
criticism was there without the people who were criticizing knowing the
background.
"You get criticized for leaving someone in a game instead of bringing in
someone else," he added, "when they don't realize that the someone else
wasn't eligible that day."
With the front office split between New York and Tampa, Stottlemyre
believes that the Yankees need to find a way for everybody to be on the
same page, which he feels hasn't been the case in recent years.
Stottlemyre also said that the criticism he spoke of wasn't necessarily
just from owner George Steinbrenner, though he added that it would have
been nice to receive some more appreciation over the years.
"I have no problem with George," Stottlemyre said. "George has been good
to me."
Stottlemyre, who was linked to the Mariners' pitching coach job in several
published reports earlier this week, said he had not had any contact with
anyone in the Seattle organization. Stottlemyre plans to return to his
home in Issaquah, Wash., to ponder his future.
"I'm not sure if I'm going to retire. I'm not using those words," he
said. "It's very sad for me. I've been here 10 years and hate to leave.
I think it's time for me to go."
