A-Rod fuels Yanks' rout of Twins

Third baseman homers twice; Lidle throws six shutout innings

NEW YORK -- When Alex Rodriguez homered in the second inning, the fans tried to
bring him out for a curtain call, but he remained in the dugout. Five innings
later, A-Rod led off the seventh inning with his second home run of the night.
This time, he didn't disappoint.

紐約--ARod在二局下打出全壘打時，現場球迷要求他接受喝采，但是他留在休息區裡。五
局過後，ARod又打出一支，這次沒有讓球迷失望。

Rodriguez led the Yankees to an 8-1 win over the Twins, New York's fourth win
in the last five games.

A-Rod went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs, while Bobby Abreu collected
three hits while driving in two runs. Derek Jeter also had three hits, as the
Yankees knocked Twins pitching around for 14 hits in the game.

"He went through a tough time, but it looks like he's out of it -- at least for
the time being," Johnny Damon said of Rodriguez's recent struggles. "There will
be microscopes on him regardless of what he does. I like what I saw today."

Following Wednesday's 0-for-7 doubleheader performance, Rodriguez was mired in
a 2-for-27 skid over the team's past eight games. In the last two games, A-Rod
is 6-for-9 with three homers, two doubles, five RBIs and four runs scored.

"Let's not say anything yet," said Joe Torre, when asked if Rodriguez was out
of his slump. "He just seems a whole lot more comfortable. I'm pleased, and
obviously everybody else is, too. He makes a huge difference."

Cory Lidle tossed six shutout innings, holding the Twins to just a pair of
hits. Lidle, who struggled in his last start, walked two and struck out four,
improving to 3-2 since being traded to the Yankees before the trade deadline.

六局無失分裡Lidle只被打出兩支安打。上場先發失常的他，本場保送二人，三振四名打者

"I felt like I was a little bit more on cruise control tonight," Lidle said. "I
just felt like I was getting ahead of more hitters and getting them to chase
pitches down in the dirt."

A-Rod's solo homer in the second and Abreu's RBI single in the third staked
Lidle to a 2-0 lead. Lidle breezed through the first three innings, holding
Minnesota without a base hit. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau each singled in the
fourth, but Lidle posted another zero, stranding them both on base.

The Yankees broke the game open in the fifth, sending 10 men to the plate in a
half-inning which lasted more than 30 minutes.

Damon, Jeter and Abreu opened the frame with consecutive singles, then Jason
Giambi reached on a fielder's choice. Morneau made a bad throw on the play,
allowing Abreu to reach second, loading the bases.

A-Rod ripped a single up the middle to score Jeter, ending Carlos Silva's night
after four-plus innings.

"It was the most gratifying hit of the day for me," Rodriguez said. "It was a

Matt Guerrier relieved Silva, but he allowed two of the three inherited runners
to score, as the Yankees took a 6-0 lead after five innings.

Lidle pitched another effective inning, leaving the game after six shutout
frames.

"Tonight, it was a little easier than last time," Lidle said. "Last time, I
fell behind everybody. It just goes to show you, when you pitch ahead it
becomes a little easier. You can expand the zone and get them to chase balls in
the dirt."

"He doesn't like to throw the ball down the middle," Torre said. "When he
misses, he's going to get behind a lot of hitters. Tonight, he was painting
really well out there. He gave us a great six innings."

A-Rod capped his night with his second blast of the game, a rocket to left that
put the Yankees ahead, 7-0. The 54,311 in attendance -- at least those who sat
through the rainy, windy conditions -- gave the third baseman a standing
ovation, prompting Torre to send Rodriguez out for a curtain call, his second
in as many days.

"I don't hear that very much," Rodriguez said when asked why he didn't come out
of the dugout in the second inning. "Unless Joe tells me to go, it's not my
nature. I don't feel comfortable doing that. ... [In the seventh], Joe told me
to go."

Mike Myers and Brian Bruney pitched the seventh, Octavio Dotel pitched the
eighth and T.J. Beam, called up from Columbus earlier in the day, allowed a run
in the ninth but closed out the game.
