Adversity brings out Joe's best

I never thought I'd write this. But I agree with Curt Schilling.
我從沒想過會這樣說 但還是不得不同意Curt Schilling

Whatever possessed Schilling to declare recently that Joe Torre is "your
Manager of the Year, right there," may never be known. I mean, it was fairly
creepy to hear a Red Sox hug a Yankee so openly. Which, presumably, is why
someone in the Red Sox clubhouse hung a sign over Schilling's locker touting
Mike Mussina for Cy Young.
或許永遠都不會知道 到底是什麼  讓Schilling說出"Joe Torre是年度最佳教練"的話
但令人發毛的是  紅襪球員竟然這樣公開抱洋基大腿
就像有人在Schilling的置物櫃上貼上"Mike Mussina拿賽揚獎"

 It would have been delicious to hear it was Terry Francona who hung that sign.
 But alas, he's probably too professional for that.
如果有的話 那大概會是Terry Francona
不過可惜的是 他太專業不會幹這種事

Anyway, if it's Schilling's point that Torre is doing a remarkable job in the
most trying of circumstances, Schilling has thrown a 95-mph heater on the
black here. The worse things get, the better Torre does.

The Yankees get sicker by the day. Yet, they're getting healthier. Their
35-22 record isn't a mirage, it's a miracle.
洋基隊傷兵到此為止 現在越來越健康 而他們的35勝22敗的戰績  不是海市蜃樓

To list all the injuries, ailments and explanations would fill this column.
Yet, without Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera on some days and
Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui on all days for now, they are playing their
best baseball of the season.

有些日子沒有Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez和Mariano Rivera

Some of that comes from the recent revelation that rookies Melky Cabrera and
Andy Phillips can play. Phillips made two neat catches on high liners last
night, and Cabrera made the game-saving catch, reaching over the wall in
left-center and stealing a home run from Manny Ramirez in what could be the
best moment of the season so far.
有些是因為最近的變革 加入了菜鳥Melky Cabrera和Andy Phillips 他兩都能打

But some of it is totally Torre, who once again has everything running
smoothly. There's a winning feel to the club, a better feel than there's been
here in years.

"He's the Manager of the Year for me," said Rodriguez, who didn't say how
pained he was to also agree with Schilling (me, I'm dealing with it).

"He's been unbelievable, as good as I've seen him," Rodriguez said. "He's
been great with the mind. He's gone Phil Jackson on us ... very talkative."

Torre won't accept the trophy yet. "It's June" is Torre's two-word answer to
such endorsements.

Ah, but what a great 10 weeks he's had. He has a hand in almost everyone's
success, from Cabrera right up to A-Rod.

Torre reassured Cabrera early, telling him he hadn't been up "long enough to
fail" last year, in effect letting him know he had a clean slate. It was just
what Cabrera needed to hear.

He told A-Rod he didn't have to be perfect, something he needed to hear just
as badly. Rodriguez was down in the dumps in April before earning player of
the month honors in May (no Mr. May cracks here), and he believes Torre has a
lot to do with his turnaround.
他告訴A-Rod 他不需要做到完美  這是他渴望聽到的
在贏得五月最佳球員(不再是五月崩潰先生)前的四月 A-Rod經歷低潮
而他相信老托對他的反彈幫助很多

"People think, you make a certain amount of money, you should know better,"
Torre said. "And that you should be some kind of robot that has no blood in
your veins."

It's not only the fans who think that, but A-Rod, as well.
這不只是球迷這樣認為 A-Rod也這樣認為

"Alex, more than anybody, tries to be so perfect," Torre said. "Alex has such
high expectations, and it's not possible to achieve what he wants. But that
doesn't mean he's not successful."
老托說"Alex比任何人都還要求自己做到完美 他對自己有很高的期待
但那是不可能的 但並不代表他不成功"

Torre looked slightly perplexed about the assessment he's "gone Phil Jackson
on us," but he didn't disagree with the implication that he's different now
than a year ago. That's because he feels different.
老托對於"像Phil Jackson一樣..."的評論有點困惑
但他並沒有不同意 他和去年不一樣  因為他的感覺也有點不同

"It could be the relationship George and I have now. I feel more comfortable
in the day-to-day operations, and I think he's part of that," Torre said.
"The relationship I've renewed with George gives me a good feeling. I feel
like we're all going in the same direction."
老托說"那有可能是因為現在我和老史的關係 讓我在每天的運作中感覺更自在
和老闆重新修補後的關係 讓我感覺很好 我覺得我們朝著同一個方向邁進"

Torre said he calls Steinbrenner "every week to 10 days," which doesn't
exactly qualify them as bosom buddies. But it's quite the improvement over
last year, when Steinbrenner probably checked caller ID to make sure it wasn't
 Torre before answering.
老托表示他大概每一個星期到十天都會打電話給老史 那並不代表他們現在是親密好兄弟
但至少改善去年的情況 那時老史可能在接電話前 都要確認一下來電者不是老托

It didn't take someone with the intellect of Torre to sense there were times
last year that Steinbrenner and some of his cohorts wanted Torre to go to.
Torre probably saved his job with the Yankees' second-half rush. But he
thought about leaving, anyway.
去年 不需要有老托的智慧都可以感覺到老史和他的大軍要老托滾蛋
但老托大概是靠著他下半季的努力保住他的飯碗 但他也考慮到隨時要走

When Torre decided to return, he mentioned moolah ($13 million left) and a
meeting (a matter of minutes in Tampa at one of Steinbrenner's favorite haunts,
 maybe IHOP), and most of us had to guess the money was a bigger factor than
the pancakes.
當老托決定要回來 他提出moolah 和一個會議 在Tampa老史最喜歡的地方
我們大部分的人都在猜測錢是比煎餅重要的因素

If the team is more relaxed, upbeat and together, it could be partly related
to a change in the clubhouse composition. Kevin Brown's no longer here, and
at the moment, Sheffield isn't around to talk about the extension he's not
getting.

也有可能是因為球員休息室組成份子的改變  Kevin Brown不再那兒了
而現在老薛也不再那兒到處嚷嚷著他沒拿到延長的合約

But the team also reflects the manager's mood. Yes, it's possible that Torre
seems even more cool and confident than usual.
但球隊也反映了教練的心情  是的 有可能老托比平常更酷更有自信
