I tell him that you can go back over the last five years and find a series of
moments like that and see how the Yankees could have won two more World
Series, maybe even more, made this the single most glorious era in the history
of the Yankees.

Torre says, "All those moments you're talking about, they went our way for a
long time. How can I talk about all the moments that changed big games for us
between '96 and 2000, and then start complaining when they don't."

Then he tells about a night in October of 1998, as big a season as any Yankee
team has ever had about to end with a sweep of the Padres in the World Series.
He is having dinner with his wife, Ali, after Game 3. He says that is
unusual, alone time like that with his wife in the postseason. So much family
around all the time, so many friends. But it is just the two of them, before
the Yankees are going to win another World Series. Torre says to his wife that
night, "Why is this happening to me?"

He has always been a grownup, from the first day, no matter how childish
things got sometimes with his owner. Now the owner has gone out and spent
more money for him, put more money into the richest and deepest batting order
in baseball history. He is asked about his offense, the one that now has
Johnny Damon at leadoff, that is worth about $100 million this season easy,
more than most teams in baseball.

Then he is talking about his pitching, how he still thinks Carl Pavano is
better off now than he was a year ago, even if he hasn't thrown a pitch in a
game this spring. He loves Shawn Chacon's stuff, and fearlessness. "He's the
one who dropped out of the sky," Torre says. He says he saw something in
Chien-Ming Wang the first night he threw him out there. Not just good stuff.
A good veteran poise.

Reggie Jackson wanders into the office at Roger Dean Stadium, the Yankees
close to batting practice. Frank Torre wanders out. One of the clubhouse guys
asks Torre to sign a couple of pictures for a couple of regular Cardinals
fans, one of him in a Cardinals uniform. He is asked again about the
tremendous expectations in every spring, in what could be his last spring if
the Yankees don't win again.

"I remember a four-game series one time when I was still managing (the
Cardinals)," he says. "We were going into Colorado to play the Rockies and I
looked at our rotation, not a single ground-ball pitcher in the group, and I
seriously thought we couldn't win a game there." He smiles. "I'll take the
kind of expectations we have here."

He is asked about the World Baseball Classic, which got his owner all jammed
up earlier in the spring. Torre talks about how Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez
and Damon will be juiced for the end of spring training upon their return,
instead of being bored at the end of March waiting for the regular season to
begin.

This is Blue Sky Joe, on a beautiful March morning, wanting to tell you more
about dinner with Musial and Red Schoendienst and his man Bob Gibson the
night before. The games don't count yet, of course. When the real games come,
so do the requirements of the team and the uniform, the requirements he has
done as much as anybody to create. This is the beginning of Act 3 for Torre.
We know about the beginning for him at Yankee Stadium, what happened in those
first years after he put on the uniform. Now he tries to write a proper
ending.
