ST. PETERSBURG -- When Gary Sheffield arrived at Tropicana Field on Wednesday,
his sore left wrist wasn't feeling any better than it had since he injured it
on Saturday. But after undergoing some oscillation therapy and assorted other
treatments, Sheffield's wrist -- and his outlook -- seemed to turn around
completely.
當週三Sheffield抵達純品康納球場(魔鬼魚主場)時，
他疼痛的左手腕關節相對於週六受傷的時候，並沒有明顯的改善。
但在接受振動療法(oscillation therapy?這是啥?)以及其他相關處理之後，

"Coming in earlier, I didn't feel good at all," Sheffield said. "Once I got
treatment, I told [trainer Gene Monahan] to tape it up and I picked up a bat.
When I put it on the spot that was hurting, I didn't have as much pain."

Sheffield hit off a tee and plans to take batting practice on Thursday,
the last step before he returns to the field for the Yankees.

"I'd like to say a day or so," Sheffield said of a potential return to the
lineup. "I'm encouraged big-time, because yesterday, I couldn't pick up the
bat and hold it. Today, I can pick it up with one hand.

that's the plan."

Following Wednesday's game, manager Joe Torre said he didn't expect to have
Sheffield in the lineup on Thursday.

"The tee is a long way away from playing," Torre said. "I hope he feels that
good to do that, but I'm not counting on it. If he says he's ready to play,
obviously we'll find a spot for him. I just don't anticipate it."

Sheffield suffered the injury on Saturday against Toronto, colliding with
first baseman Shea Hillenbrand while running out a ground ball. Sheffield
said that his head bothered him and his back locked up after the collision,
but it wasn't until everything in his body settled down a day or two later
that he realized how much his wrist hurt.

This isn't the first time that Sheffield has injured the wrist, as he missed
10 games in April 2002 after spraining his wrist while diving into the stands
to make a catch. Sheffield, who was in his first year with the Braves, received
three cortisone shots that season.

Torre said that Sheffield would have to be much better than he was Wednesday
to play, as his violent swing could lead to reinjuring the wrist if he comes

"He doesn't just put the bat on the ball," Torre said. "Once he starts getting

Sheffield, who is from Tampa, was discouraged not to be able to play on
Wednesday in front of his family and friends, but he wouldn't rule out being
in the lineup on Thursday night.

"It's a very strong possibility if he says it; he's the patient," Monahan said.
"We have to go by what he says, but it's certainly a good sign as opposed to
