NEW YORK -- Gary Sheffield trotted out to first base during batting practice
on Friday, taking grounders and making throws with a shiny new first
baseman's glove.
Is this a sign of things to come for Sheffield?

As unlikely as it may seem, Sheffield could be in the Yankees' plans for 2007
 after all, sharing time with Jason Giambi as the first baseman and designated
 hitter.

"It's certainly something that could make sense," manager Joe Torre said.

New York holds a $13 million option on Sheffield for next season, and while
 it looked like his days in pinstripes were numbered when the Yanks acquired
 Bobby Abreu to play right field, this latest development has created some new
 options.

"I think there's a chance," Torre said when asked if he thought the Yankees
would pick up Sheffield's option this winter. "You never know what's going to
shake out between now and then. I don't think that, because we got Abreu,
that it's out of the question."

Sheffield knows that if he is to come back, it would probably have to be in a
 new role, as Abreu is signed for $15 million next season. The Yankees recently
 approached Sheffield with the first base idea, and he was more than willing to
 give it a try.
"If I knew I was coming back here, I'd do whatever they wanted me to do,
 Sheffield said. "All this does is allow me to show that I can play another
 position. If I'm not back here, it allows me the opportunity to look for
 another ballclub and say I can play first base, outfield or whatever."
老薛也明白若他歸隊,右外野也不再歸他管了,洋基向他提議去守一壘,他也欣然接受.
老薛說:"若洋基要我回來,我會盡力去做他們希望我做的,包括防守其他位子,
若是到其他球隊,他們也會知道我內外皆可防守".



Sheffield began his career as a shortstop before moving to third base in 1989,
his second season with the Brewers. He played third through the 1993 season,
moving to the outfield in 1994 with Florida.

Because of his experience at four different positions, Sheffield is confident
that a move to first base wouldn't be a problem, even at the age of 37.

"I'm an athlete; I started my career at shortstop, so first base isn't really
that difficult for me," Sheffield said. "It's going to be challenging, becaus
 it's something I've never done, but it's just like anything else I've tried.
 In left field, right field and third base, as long as I had time to learn the position, I played it fairly well."

"He can do it; I don't have a question," Torre said. "If he can play third
base, he can do that. That's not even an issue."

在Sheffield的職業生涯中,他是以游擊手起家的,也防守過三壘.

Neither Torre nor Sheffield can say whether the first-base experiment will
begin this season, as Sheffield hasn't yet been cleared to take batting
practice. Sheffield has been told that Sept. 15 is a likely date for his
return, but he's still targeting Sept. 1 as his goal.

"I'm worried about getting healthy now, not about switching positions,"
Sheffield said. "I can't think about all that at once. I'm just focused on
getting healthy; I want to go out and show that I'm the same player I've
always been."

"He feels good and he feels he's getting stronger, but they have to turn him
loose to do something," Torre said. "The only thing he can do now is catch
the ball."

因為Sheffield還沒開始打擊練習,所以Sheffield和Torre都不敢說是否從這個球季開始守

Sheffield spent most of batting practice at first, taking grounders, making
throws to second base and getting an overall feel for the position. He worked
with Don Mattingly last week, but on Friday, the Yankees' hitting coach watche
 from afar. Sheffield said that the most challenging part of playing first is
making the throw to second, as he is usually throwing at a moving target.

"I went out there on my own today to see what I don't know and what I need to
improve on," Sheffield said. "He said that he liked everything he saw. I think
 I'll pick up on it pretty quick, because I've played shortstop."


在一壘的守備練習中,Sheffield接了許多滾地球並傳到二壘,
老薛:"把球從一壘傳到二壘是個重點,Don Mattingly認為我做的不錯,
我想我會很快上手,因為我曾經是個游擊手".


Sheffield wasn't sure when he was scheduled to visit Dr. Charles Melone, but he
stays in contact with the hand specialist on a regular basis. Sheffield believes
that once he is given the go-ahead to pick up a bat, it won't be long before
he's ready to return from the DL.

"Once I pick up a bat, I'll be able to go 100 percent," Sheffield said. "He
just wants it to heal solid before I do that."

Having made his mark throughout his career with his bat, Sheffield seems
intrigued by the idea of finishing his career at a new spot.

"I didn't think that I would be the first baseman and Jason would be the DH, or
vice versa," Sheffield said. "If that's the case this year, I'm fine with it.
If that's the way it is the rest of my career, I'm fine with that, too.

"It's not about playing positions for me; if I was worried about accolades, I
would have stayed at shortstop and let my numbers speak for themselves. It
wasn't about that for me. I like challenges, and I'll take them all on. I
welcome it."

老薛說:"當我可以開始打擊,那我離歸隊的日子就不遠了.
        過去,我沒想過和大吉輪流當一壘手及DH,但今年這種情形我是ok的
        並且若以這種方式來結束我的職業生涯我是可以接受的,
        我不在乎防守的位子,若我在乎,我就會一直當個游擊手!
        我喜歡挑戰,我也會克服它們!
