Gary Sheffield didn't have much success as a first baseman but it remains to
be seen how he will do as an author.
Sheffield's book, "Inside Power," (co-written with David Ritz) will be
released in April and in it the outspoken slugger addresses a number of
issues, including his role in the BALCO steroids investigation.
"When you want the truth, you get the truth, and there are a lot of people
who can't handle the truth," Sheffield said in an interview with Fox Sports
Radio. "Like I always said, I'll give it to you just like I'm supposed to."
Sheffield said the truth about the Yankees' early exit this season is that
Joe Torre might have sped it along by dropping Alex Rodriguez to eighth in
the batting order for Game 4 of the division series. The slugger said he felt
the move gave the Tigers extra confidence and may have worried some of the
Yankees.
There was a quick reaction from Yankeeland.
"Maybe it did for some," GM Brian Cashman said. "That's a decision our
manager felt was important to make and he made it."
When Sheffield was asked if he ever knowingly took steroids - he reportedly
admitted to unknowingly using them during grand jury testimony - he said no.
"Never, any whatsoever in my life," Sheffield said.
Sheffield said he was irked by other players who use steroids since their
power numbers improve.
"The thing of it is I worked real hard - I know for a fact that I bust my
butt every four months in the offseason, and I come back and all of a sudden
I have the same amount of home runs as certain people have," Sheffield said.
"Then next thing you know five years later, you've got 200 more home runs
then me - like that can really happen. That's where I drew the line."
It's unclear whether Sheffield will be back with the Yankees next year. The
Yanks have a $13 million option on him but are unlikely to pick it up since
they have Bobby Abreu signed to play right field. Sheffield said he would
like to stay with the Yanks but plans to play three more seasons regardless.
He has said he wants to win one more World Series, as well as reach 500
career home runs (he's got 455).
