Sanchez, who went to high school in the Bronx, pitched at Double- and
Triple-A this year. A hard thrower who can reach 95, Sa'nchez was dominant at
the former level, posting a 1.76 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings.
His ERA in 51.1 Triple-A innings was 3.86. Despite good stuff, Sa'nchez has
some obvious downsides. "You're talking about a guy who always has weight
problems, and has never made it through a whole season," said Kevin
Goldstein, who writes about the minor leagues for Baseball Prospectus. "This
year he pitched a career high 123 innings. He's been given four opportunities
to make it through a whole minor league season and he's failed. He's still a
very good prospect." Sa'nchez's minor league record is checkered. His career
ERA is 4.16 and he has often fought his control.

Whelan, a 2005 fourth-round draft pick out of Texas A&M, pitched in the
Florida State League. Another hard thrower, Whelan put in his first full
season this year and was especially remarkable in the second half. "He had
some injury problems early in the season," Goldstein said, "but after June 1,
he had a 1.42 ERA in with 50 strikeouts in 33 innings, with 22 hits and 12
walks." Whelan throws hard but in an unusual way. "He's a weird cat where
it's hard to give him any kind of comps. He's short and stocky. He started
out as a catcher and he's built like a catcher. He doesn't throw anything but
fastballs, but he has four of them — a classic four-seam, a classic
two-seam, a splitter, and a sinker. He's generally 91-93, but he touches 95."

There is every possibility that Sa'nchez and Whelan will be seen in the Bronx
next summer. Sa'nchez is probably as close to ready to pitch in the majors as
he's going to get. Whelan is not far away. Whether the Yankees commit to them
or sign a bunch of old men to get in their way is a different matter, as will
be the major league staff's tolerance of their initial struggles. If he's not
watched carefully, Joe Torre could turn Kevin Whelan into Todd Erdos.

Claggett is a longer-range prospect, having not pitched above the Midwest
League but for one inning at Toledo. "He has that weird combination of a
very, very good slider but not a ton of velocity," said Goldstein. "He's not
a soft-tosser, but he tops out at 88, 89. There are a lot of minor league
closers who come up with that combination but never develop." Claggett
pitched extremely well at West Michigan, posting a 0.91 ERA in 59 1/3
innings, allowing just 35 hits and 20 walks while striking out 58.
