Johnson leaves with minor injury
Despite tweaking back, he says he's fine for next start
ANAHEIM -- Randy Johnson left Thursday night's game with a back injury, but
neither he nor manager Joe Torre appeared to be overly concerned that the
problem would impact the Big Unit's next start.
Johnson felt a tweak in his back in the sixth inning against the Angels,
catching his spike on the mound while delivering a 1-0 pitch to Orlando Cabrera.
"I kind of dragged my foot, and my momentum kind of put a lot of my body
weight on my right side," Johnson said. "I felt my back tweak a little bit, but
I've done it before."
"He threw a bouncer to the plate, and when he threw it, he caught his spike,
" Torre said. "You could see he was uncomfortable."
Torre and team trainer Steve Donahue went to the mound to check on Johnson,
who remained in the game. After throwing a third ball, Johnson intentionally
walked Cabrera to load the bases for Steve Finley. Johnson got Finley to
ground out to first to end the inning, but Torre saw enough to know that
Johnson's night was finished.
"I was watching him come over to first base and it looked like he was wincing
a little bit," Torre said. "He probably could have pitched another inning, but
I certainly didn't want to send him out there. When he went over to cover
first on the last out of the inning, it looked like he was favoring it a little
. Hopefully, he'll be all right."
Johnson allowed two runs on four hits in six innings, throwing just 89 pitches.
He walked two and struck out four, leaving the game with a 5-2 lead only to
watch the bullpen surrender the lead in the seventh.
"It was more of a precautionary thing. My back is a little tight, but I don't
anticipate anything major," Johnson said. "I feel fine. I can touch my toes
now, I'll be able to touch my toes tomorrow."
The Yankees are already playing with three starting pitchers -- Carl Pavano,
Chien-Ming Wang and Jaret Wright -- on the disabled list, so an injury to
Johnson would be a huge blow to the team.
"You wonder what we're feeding our starting pitchers," Torre said with a smile.
"I think he'll be fine."
Torre said he didn't know whether Johnson would go for tests on his back,
saying that the team would wait to see how the left-hander responded on Friday.
"If it's normal stiffness, our trainers will work on him and we have an off-day
on Monday," Torre said. "I think we'll have a pretty good idea by the time we
leave here."
"I'm fine," said Johnson, who clearly didn't want to discuss the matter any
further. "I'll end it there. I'll be fine."
