Unit pleased with first outing
Left-hander surrenders three runs, notches two strikeouts

TAMPA, Fla. -- One year ago, Randy Johnson was nursing a sore calf muscle,
waiting to take the mound in an exhibition game for the first time.

When he finally did, a big blast by Chipper Jones prompted panic in New York,
as fans wondered if the Big Unit was feeling his age.

On Saturday, Johnson took the hill for his first start of 2006, right on
schedule. There was another big blast -- this time, a two-run homer by young

 year is always a spectacle, with fans and media chronicling every move.
Johnson went through that last spring, making for some uncomfortable times
for the five-time Cy Young Award winner.

That's all behind him now. With a year in the Bronx under his belt, Johnson
is simply looking at this spring as a time to get himself ready for the
regular season, when he plans to let his fastball, slider and the results they

"Everything for him is easier now the second time around," said catcher Jorge

Saturday's start lasted three innings, as Johnson allowed three runs on three
hits. He walked one and struck out two, throwing 48 pitches, 30 for strikes.

"I threw a good amount of pitches, was competitive today and threw an inning
more than what I was hoping to throw," Johnson said. "From that standpoint, I

Johnson also had his first chance of the spring to work with Posada in a game,
 as the pitcher and catcher work toward repairing a relationship which was
strained at times in 2005.

One of the things that Johnson liked about pitching to John Flaherty last
season was Flaherty's ability to pick up on mechanical flaws during a game.

Johnson retired Ryan Freel to open the game, then walked Rich Aurilia to put
a man on base. He got ahead of Encarnacion, 1-2, but a fastball that was
supposed to be up and in sailed right over the plate, and the 23-year-old
crushed it over the left-field fence.

Johnson worked a quick 1-2-3 second inning, so manager Joe Torre decided to
send him back out for the third, as the southpaw had thrown just 27 pitches.
Johnson retired the first two hitters in the third, but Aurilia and
Encarnacion ripped back-to-back doubles, giving Cincinnati a 3-0 lead.

"He was satisfied with the way he felt," said Torre. "He misguided a couple
of pitches, but aside from that, he got a good workout."

Johnson didn't appear to be concerned about his final pitching line, saying
he would have had the same work to do in the next month even if he had thrown
three scoreless innings. He admitted that his location and mechanics were a
little off, but with each start, those should begin to become more consistent.

"Overall, I was pretty pleased that I was able to go out there," Johnson said.

Johnson's next start will come on Thursday, most likely against Detroit in
the home portion of the Yankees' split-squad day. Assuming he pitches every
five days, he will have four more starts after that to fine-tune his arsenal
before taking the mound on April 3 in Oakland for the season opener.
