Johnson struggles in start; bullpen hit hard in relief

NEW YORK -- The Yankees have been very happy with the consistency of their top
three starting pitchers in recent weeks, but Saturday was not a day to cele-
brate that point.
洋基一直對穩定先發群很滿意，但是週六不是那麼回事。
The Devil Rays hammered Randy Johnson and the Yankees, 19-6, snapping New
York's four-game winning streak while equaling a Tampa Bay record for runs
scored in a game.

"They killed us today," said manager Joe Torre. "I wish I could come up with an
explanation other than that we got our rear ends kicked, but that's the best I
can do."

Johnson, who had given up three earned runs or less in seven of his previous
eight starts, equaled his shortest start of the season, allowing nine runs (six
earned) in 3 1/3 innings.

The Big Unit, who averaged 115 pitches in his past two starts, allowed six hits
and three walks without striking out a single batter.

"I had bad location, and I paid the price," Johnson said. "I've been pitching
pretty well. I'll bounce back."

New York dropped a game in the AL East standings, as Boston came back to defeat
Los Angeles at Fenway Park. The Yankees, who saw Boston mount its comeback on
the out-of-town scoreboard, now trail the first-place Red Sox by 1 1/2 games.

"This could have been a very good day for us to overtake the lead," Johnny
Damon said. "We will; it's just a matter of time. We've been playing good ball,

The 13-run loss is not the worst suffered by the Yankees this season, as New
York dropped a 19-1 decision at Cleveland on July 4. The Yankees followed that
game with a four-game winning streak.

"If you lose one game, the score really doesn't matter," Torre said. "It's not
going affect our confidence or how we feel about ourselves."

Things actually started out well for the Yankees, as Derek Jeter and Jason
Giambi ripped back-to-back homers against Jae Seo in the first inning, getting
New York out to a quick 2-0 lead.

"We felt pretty good," Damon said. "We definitely came ready to play, but it's
a funny game, how momentum changes very quickly."

Johnson, who sat down the first five batters in the game, walked Jonny Gomes
with two outs in the second. Damon Hollins followed with a fly ball to left-
center, which Damon appeared to have tracked down. But the ball popped out of
Damon's glove, putting runners at second and third.

"Everything happened with two outs, and that's not indicative of how well I've

Hollins did more damage in the third, crushing a three-run homer off Johnson
with two outs to make it a 6-2 game. New York answered with two runs in the
bottom of the inning on a Jorge Posada double, but that was as close as the
game would get.

That's because the Rays drove Johnson from the game in the fourth, scoring
three more runs against the Big Unit.

recounting his afternoon. "I'm just going to put it behind me and move on."

Shawn Chacon, who worked a magic act while getting out of a bases-loaded, no-
out jam on Wednesday in Texas, couldn't repeat the task, hitting a batter,
walking another and allowing a two-run single, as Tampa Bay took a commanding
six-run lead.

"You certainly want him to go in the right direction," Torre said. "I don't
believe it's for lack of effort, he just came in and struggled."

The Devil Rays continued to pour it on, scoring a run in both the fifth and
sixth to make it a 12-4 game. New York mounted a mini-threat in the sixth,
scoring a run before loading the bases with two outs for Alex Rodriguez. But A-
Rod grounded into a fielder's choice on the first pitch, stranding the bases
loaded.

"We still had opportunities to come back and make up for the runs they scored,"
Damon said, "but we just kept giving them more runs."

runs to take a 18-5 lead. Myers, whose last appearance came 12 days ago, faced
three hitters, giving up a double and a single before Travis Lee smoked a line-
drive home run to right field.

"He hadn't pitched for a while," Torre said. "That was the only reason he was
out there, because he hadn't been called on. Even though it's a bad result, the
fact that he got in there should help."

If there is a silver lining for the Yankees, it's that Mike Mussina will take
the mound Sunday in search of his 13th victory. The Yankees are 7-3 in games
started by Mussina following a New York loss.

"We're going into tomorrow's game expecting to win," Damon said. "They scored
19 runs, but it still counts as just one loss for us. We just need to go out,
play solid, play D and score some runs. We'll be OK."

"These games are less crushing than a 2-1 or an extra-inning loss," A-Rod said.
"Hopefully we'll bounce back tomorrow and win the series."
