Rodriguez hits sacrifice fly in seventh inning for winning run

NEW YORK -- Joe Torre dropped Alex Rodriguez out of the cleanup spot on Monday
for the first time since July 19. Jason Giambi had tremendous success against
Angels starter John Lackey, so Torre moved him to the No. 4 hole, protecting
him with Rodriguez.

So when the biggest situation of the game presented itself for the Yankees, it
only figured that there would be an open base for Los Angeles to put Giambi,
leaving the pressure squarely on A-Rod's shoulders.

Rodriguez was faced with the bases loaded and one out, and he had not fared
well in those situations. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he had gotten a
 runner home from third base with less than two outs just 38.9 percent of the
time, which ranked 130th out of 135 players (minimum 20 opportunities) in the
Majors.

This time, Rodriguez came through.

A-Rod's sacrifice fly off Lackey scored Johnny Damon, snapping a tie and
helping the Yanks to a 7-2 win over the Angels at Yankee Stadium.

"That was a great game," Rodriguez said. "It was almost a playoff atmosphere
out there, so it was good to win."

New York, which split the four-game set, also gained a game on Boston in the
American League East, as the Red Sox fell to the Tigers at Fenway Park.
The Yankees lead the Sox by two games, three in the loss column.

Randy Johnson allowed two runs over seven innings, winning his 13th game of the
season. The Big Unit allowed eight hits and walked one, striking out five.
After winning just once in four starts from July 14-July 29, Johnson has now
won two straight outings.

"Nothing today was any different. I didn't throw a knuckleball; I threw the
same pitches I've been throwing all along," Johnson said. "You just see the
difference between when you have your location and when you don't."

Jorge Posada went 3-for-4 with a home run, snapping his 0-for-25 skid in the
process. Derek Jeter also went deep, blasting a two-run shot.

"You just keep hitting the ball hard; that's all I wanted to do today," Posada
said. "It felt good, the whole day. Everything we're doing as a team."

Jeter got the Yankees on the board in the third, drilling a two-run homer, his
10th, off Lackey.

Johnson made those two runs stand up through six innings, holding the Angels

"Randy has been a dominant pitcher for a long, long time," Torre said. "Not too
many guys at his age dominate the game. Nolan Ryan did it and Roger is still
doing it."

The Angels finally got to Johnson in the seventh, getting a pair of two-out hits
by Chone Figgins and Howie Kendrick to tie the game at 2. Johnson retired Orlando
 Cabrera for the final out in the inning, stranding Kendrick on second as the
potential go-ahead run.

"These guys are tough; they come right at you," Torre said. "I thought he did
a great job of controlling the game."

The Yankees turned to small ball in their half of the seventh, as Damon led off
with a single and Jeter bunted for a base hit. Bobby Abreu, who hadn't laid
down a sacrifice bunt since 1998, saw the sign from third-base coach Larry Bowa
and knew what he had to do.

"You have to just put it down and move the runners," Abreu said. "You just have
to do the job, so I said that to myself."

"He hasn't been swinging the bat as well as he did four or five days ago,
" explained Torre. "I felt like I wanted to put pressure on the opposition and
see what we came away with."

Abreu executed the play, moving Damon and Jeter to second and third. Lackey
intentionally walked Giambi, bringing A-Rod to the plate.

"I knew when I bunted Bobby that Alex was going to be in the middle of it,"
 Torre said. "The situation is going to find you."

Lackey got ahead in the count, 1-2, but Rodriguez drilled a ball to right field
on the fourth pitch. It didn't have quite enough to leave the park, but it was
good enough to score Damon, giving the Yankees a one-run lead with six outs to
go.

"Off a guy like Lackey, it's unrealistic to think you're going to string
together four or five hits," Rodriguez said. "It was a great bunt by Jeter, a
great bunt by Bobby. It was a nice way to manufacture a run."

"That's how you have you win games, especially close ones against a team with
that type of pitching staff," Jeter said. "You have to do the small things, and
we were able to do that today."

Kyle Farnsworth pitched a perfect eighth, then the Yankees piled on four more
runs against Brendan Donnelly and J.C. Romero, boosting the lead to 7-2. The
first of those runs came on Posada's solo homer, his 15th.

"It was just a matter of time," Torre said. "He's hit some balls hard and
come away empty. He needed one of these. Hopefully it will get him going a

got real serious," Jeter said. "I was 0-for-32 and Jason was 0-for-32 in the same
season. We encouraged him. We said if he got out seven more times, we'd sit
down and talk to him."

Mariano Rivera, who had already been warming up, came in and closed the door
with a scoreless ninth.

The Yankees are now 3-2 in the first five games of their 21-game, 20-day
stretch. Tuesday, the Orioles come to town for the first of three games, then
the Yanks head to Boston for five games in four days against the Red Sox.

"We need for everybody to do their best," Torre said. "Hopefully, Alex is
coming to the point now where he's as comfortable as I've seen him in awhile."

在20天打21場比賽,如同狗一般的緊湊賽程中,接下來將在主場迎戰金鶯隊,
