Finale pits Johnson vs. Washburn
New York (76-49) at Seattle (57-69), 10:05 p.m. ET
By CJ Bowles / MLB.com
A night after Chien-Ming Wang notched his 15th win of the season, Randy
Johnson will try to do the same Thursday against a very familiar opponent.
Johnson played for the Mariners for 10 seasons and still ranks among the
team's best in many statistical categories. He has been well-received in his
few starts in the Pacific Northwest since his departure in 1998.
The Yankees lefty has won each of his last three starts and five of his last
seven decisions. In two career starts at Safeco Field, Johnson is 2-0 with a
0.00 ERA.
Johnson's task will be a lot easier if the Yankees offense produces that way
it did Wednesday, scoring seven runs before the end of the fourth inning.
"We like to make the pitcher work," said manager Joe Torre, referring to
forcing Mariners starter Felix Hernandez into a high pitch count. "We feel
that strategy works for us."
Pitching matchup
SEA: LHP Jarrod Washburn (6-12, 4.43 ERA)
In his fourth start against his former team this season, Washburn allowed six
runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Angels on Saturday. In his last start
against the Yankees, Washburn allowed four runs in 6 1/3, but only one of the
runs was earned.
NYY: LHP Randy Johnson (14-9, 4.98 ERA)
In his only start against the Mariners this season, Johnson pitched eight
innings, allowing three runs and striking out 11, but it wasn't enough to
defeat his former team. Johnson has won his last three starts and all of them
came against teams still battling for a spot in the playoffs.
Player to watch
Although Alex Rodriguez missed Wednesday's game with a fever and viral
infection in his throat, no Yankees player has faced Washburn more or had
more success against him. In 36 at-bats, Rodriguez is batting .333 with five
home runs and nine RBIs.
