Johnson to undergo back surgery

NEW YORK -- Randy Johnson has decided to undergo surgery on his back after
consulting with Los Angeles-based specialist Robert Watkins.

Having pitched through September with a sore back, Johnson underwent an
MRI late in the month and was diagnosed with a herniated disk. Watkins
has concurred with the diagnosis, and a date for surgery should be set
this week.

A person familiar with the diagnosis said Johnson should be ready for
the opening of spring training and described the procedure as
straightforward and similar to one Johnson underwent in 1996.

Johnson, 43, has one year remaining on his contract. He was 17-11 with
a 5.00 ERA this year and lost his Division Series start against the
Detroit Tigers, allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The funeral today for Cory Lidle in Covina, Calif., is expected to be
attended by approximately 2,000 fans, friends and family. Derek Jeter
and Jason Giambi have indicated they will be there, as well as Yankees
manager Joe Torre and GM Brian Cashman.

The Yankees took three players off their 40-man roster. Reserve
infielder Andy Cannizaro was outrighted to Triple-A Scranton,
and backup catcher Sal Fasano and infielder Nick Green refused
outright assignments and chose to become free agents.
