Randy Johnson is 43 and coming off back surgery and two uneven seasons in
New York. He does not have much time left to add to his legacy, and if he
does, he may not end up doing it as a Yankee. Because the Yankees now appear
open to the idea of trading Johnson, perhaps to the Arizona Diamondbacks,
for whom Johnson pitched for six seasons. He won four Cy Young awards for
them, and a World Series in 2001.
強森已經43而且剛動完手術，而且度過兩個不太順的球季。如果他還有什麼添加在他

A Johnson trade, if it happened quickly enough, would allow the Yankees to
enter the competition for the prized free-agent starter Barry Zito, another
left-hander who, except for his Cy Young season of 2002, has never enjoyed
the same success as Johnson, but who at 28 is 15 years younger than Johnson
and considerably healthier.

The teams known to be bidding for Zito include the Mets, the Giants, the
Texas Rangers and the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees?potential involvement
would create a dream situation for the agent Scott Boras, who would then be
able to pit the Yankees against the Mets. Boras tried doing that two off-s
easons ago with center fielder Carlos Beltr嫕, but the Yankees were not
interested and Beltr嫕 went to the Mets.

If the Yankees join the race for Zito, it will clearly create problems for
the Mets, who have been stymied in their attempts to add a veteran front-line
starter to a staff that now consists of two over-40 pitchers in Tom Glavine
and Orlando Hern嫕dez and a group of younger, talented but unproven pitchers
like Mike Pelfrey and Oliver P廨ez .

The Yankees have already upgraded their rotation by signing Andy Pettitte and
the Japanese left-hander Kei Igawa. Adding Zito to a staff headlined by Chien-
Ming Wang and Mike Mussina would make the Yankees younger and would further
counter the Red Sox?acquisition of Daisuke Matsuzaka. And even then, the
Yankees might not be done.

If the Yankees succeeded in dumping Johnson旧 contract, it would be easier
on their luxury tax-burdened budget to add Roger Clemens at some point next
season, assuming Clemens is still interested in pitching and wants to come
back to New York. However, the Yankees seem intent on pursuing Clemens even
if they cannot trade Johnson.

Johnson has a no-trade provision in his contract, so he would have to approve
any trade. According to the executive, Johnson let the Yankees know a few

Paradise Valley, Ariz. The Yankees are not adamantly opposed to the idea,
perhaps because Johnson is only two months removed from surgery to repair
a herniated disk that leaves him questionable for the beginning of next
season and beyond.

After a rocky beginning to his career in New York, in which he shoved a
cameraman on his way to his Yankees physical, Johnson has adjusted to the
Bronx relatively well. But despite winning 17 games in each of his two

unfulfilled expectations.

At times, in the past two seasons, he has looked overpowering. At others,
he has looked overwhelmed and every bit his 43 years. In each of the past
two Octobers, the Yankees lost his start in the first-round division series
and were subsequently eliminated.

Johnson has spent the past two months at home recovering from surgery.
It now appears up to the Yankees to determine whether Johnson旧 staying
at home is the more palatable option for both sides.
