Reliever Octavio Dotel has been told by sports orthopedist James Andrews to
stay off a mound for 10 days, significantly pushing back the timetable for
his arrival. "I would say another month is safe," Joe Torre said. "Maybe the
end of July."

Dotel, one year removed from Tommy John surgery, had hoped to pitch only one
or two more minor-league rehab games. But he felt pain in the back of his
elbow a week ago, and an MRI by Andrews showed irritation. Now his immediate
plans consist of playing catch Monday in Tampa.

Dotel said he still feels the pain in his elbow "a little bit." He added,
"You always worry when you're coming off Tommy John surgery, or any surgery,

again?' You think about it."

Yankees scout Jeff Wetherby was in attendance for John Smoltz's start for the
Braves against Tampa Bay Friday night. Smoltz, 39, recently said he is open
to getting traded to a contender, but he left after only 29 pitches through 1
2/3 innings because of a strained right groin. He is listed as day-to-day.

being back by mid-August. "He's planning on being back here sooner than we
anticipate him being back, and that's fine with us," Torre said. "He's able

Gary Sheffield stopped by the Stadium but did not make himself available to
reporters. The Yankees said he had stitches removed from his left wrist
surgery. Sheffield, who has not spoken publicly since he went on the DL June
1, said through a spokesman that his wrist is "healing nicely." His wife,
Deleon, gave birth to a son, Noah, June 15.

the eighth for Double-A Trenton Friday, but Connecticut's Derin McMains lined
his first pitch of the inning down the leftfield line for a double.
