Yankees not quite Wright in loss
A-Rod ties DiMaggio for most homers by a righty
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- Apparently, Jaret Wright has a bull's-eye on him that he doesn't
know about. For the third time in five starts, Wright was hit by a foreign
object on the mound, this time drilled by a batted ball in the chest.
Unfortunately for the right-hander, it wasn't the low point of his day, as
the Blue Jays hit him for seven runs in one-plus inning, handing the Yankees
a 7-4 loss.
Wright, pitching just six days after being hit on the back of his elbow by
a broken bat, wasn't completely at fault for the ugly loss, as crucial
errors by Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano led to four unearned runs.
"There's not much you can do about it," said Jorge Posada. "It's a loss. We
made some mistakes on the field, and it cost us a game. We'll come out
here tomorrow to win another ballgame."
Jorge Posada
New York's loss, coupled with Boston's 4-3 victory over the Orioles,
created a tie atop the American League East. The setback also snapped the
Yankees' five-game winning streak, dropping them to 4-1 on their final
homestand of the regular season.
"Now's not the time to worry about this loss, because we have to come back
tomorrow," said Derek Jeter. "You try to win every game, but it doesn't
happen all the time."
Wright didn't have it from the start, allowing singles to each of the
first three batters, loading the bases. Shea Hillenbrand hit a dribbler
down the third-base line for a fourth straight hit, plating Russ Adams to
give the Jays a quick 1-0 lead.
Eric Hinske then lined a ball to left field, but Matsui had trouble with
it. The ball glanced off Matsui's glove, allowing a pair of runs to score
on the play.
"Honestly, I don't know how I missed that ball and dropped it," Matsui said
through his interpreter. "I ran to it like I usually do, and I felt like
I caught it. I should have caught it like I usually do, but it dropped in.
I really don't have any excuse."
Wright, who was hit in the neck by a ball on Sept. 1, then hit by a bat in
his last start, proved to be a magnet for trouble once again. Gregg Zaun's
comebacker nailed Wright on the right side of his chest, though he remained
in the game after testing himself with some warmup pitches. Reed Johnson
added a sacrifice fly, boosting the lead to 4-0.
Gregg Zaun
"You try to prepare, mentally, when things like that happen, to clear them
out of your head and get a couple of starts under your belt that go OK,"
Wright said. "When it keeps happening, it's definitely frustrating."
"He's like a magnet out there. Anything that's hit hard seems to hit him
somewhere," said manager Joe Torre. "It's just crazy. To get hit with a
couple of balls and a bat, that's a little unusual."
X-rays taken on Wright's chest were negative, though Torre wouldn't commit
to the right-hander making his next start on Thursday.
Alex Rodriguez cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, belting a
two-run homer to left. It was A-Rod's 46th homer of the season, tying
him with Joe DiMaggio (1937) for the most in team history by a right-handed
hitter.
"That I'm such a big fan of Joe DiMaggio makes it special," Rodriguez said.
"Unfortunately, on a day like today, you can't really enjoy it."
Wright loaded the bases again in the second, allowing two singles before w
alking Frank Catalanotto. That was enough for Torre, who called on Aaron
Small from the bullpen to replace Wright.
Wright
"It was just location; everything was belt-high. Even the games he's pitched
well, it's been a problem getting through the first inning," Torre said.
"If we had helped him, he would have only given up two runs."
"I was bad," Wright said. "It's disappointing that I went out and pitched
like that today, because we're hoping for a better outcome."
All three runners went on to score, one on a sacrifice fly and two on an
error by Cano, but Small did a good job to minimize the damage after
that. He allowed just two hits from the third through the sixth, giving
the offense a chance to grind its way back into the game.
"I was locating well. I didn't feel like I had a lot of velocity, just
like I never do," Small said. "It was just locating the ball, working in
on guys, keeping it down in the zone. That's key for me."
A-Rod singled in his third run in the second, but Toronto starter Scott
Downs retired eight in a row from that point forward. New York broke
through for another run in the sixth, chasing Downs from the game after
5 2/3 innings.
Downs
Rodriguez came to the plate with two outs in the sixth, representing the
tying run, but Justin Speier got him to fly out to end the inning.
"They've got capable guys over there with the ability to get us out,"
Rodriguez said. "Today, we put ourselves in position to get the big hit;
we just couldn't get it done."
Small pitched into the eighth, allowing four hits during his six innings.
Small struck out three and did not walk a batter.
"He kept us in the game and gave us a chance to dig back out," Torre said.
"It was hugely important for us."
The Yankees made one last comeback attempt in the eighth, loading the
bases with two outs when Jason Frasor walked both Derek Jeter and A-Rod.
Toronto brought in Miguel Batista to face Jason Giambi, and the closer
came through, striking Giambi out to preserve the lead. Batista struck
out the side in the ninth to earn his 30th save.
"I was proud of the way we kept coming back; we just couldn't get that one
hit to get us over the hump," Torre said. "We had opportunities. From the
looks of things, it just wasn't our day."

GO YANKEES!
