Damon makes early appearance
New Yankee says hello to teammates, current and former

TAMPA, Fla. -- Position players don't report to camp until Tuesday, but Johnny
Damon made a surprise appearance at Legends Field on Saturday to get a look
at his new Spring Training home.

A smiling Damon strolled into the Yankees clubhouse shortly after 9 a.m. ET,
stopping at the locker of every player to either introduce himself or, in
some cases -- such as former Red Sox teammate Mike Myers, who met Damon with
a friendly hug -- to say hello to a familiar face.

"I'm going to be spending a lot of time with these guys," Damon said. "[I

Damon's presence caught people by surprise, including Torre. After greeting
all of his teammates, Damon tried on his pinstriped pants, dropped some stuff
at his locker and said he planned on working out in the weight room and the
batting cage after taking the last five days off.

request, next to his good friend, Jason Giambi.

"I'm very happy for him," Damon said. "[I'm] always happy to see him succeed,
and this year will be no different. I want him to succeed in all the games,

For Damon, his new clubhouse is a stark contrast from his last one. No longer
one of the "Idiots" from Boston, Damon now finds himself in the Yankees'
business-like atmosphere, where nothing less than a World Series title is
acceptable.

"I've only been here for a half hour, but [the clubhouse is] filled with
great players -- great players that expect to win," Damon said. "All these
guys here seem to be having a great time. You can see the confidence, and
that's important.

"There's something about putting on the pinstripes that makes players become
better," he added. "Players become better when they're surrounded by other

Over the past few years, the Yankees' major offseason acquisitions have had
trouble adapting to New York during their first year in the Bronx. From Roger
Clemens to Giambi, Alex Rodriguez and Randy Johnson, each of them went through
an adjustment period after putting on the pinstripes.

Torre doesn't believe that Damon will have that same problem, as his
personality and his experience in Boston have prepared him for his next
challenge.

"I try to tell everybody to be themselves and not try to do too much ... but
you realize they have to figure it out themselves," Torre said. "In Johnny's
case, playing with Boston, they've spent as much time at Yankee Stadium as
any other visiting team. The only thing I said to him is, 'You've already
established who you are, so there's nothing for you to do that has to be any
different.'"

Of course, Damon will have big shoes to fill when he takes his place in
center field, becoming the first regular at the position other than Bernie
Williams since 1992. Damon and Williams, who are both represented by agent
Scott Boras, have not spoken since Damon signed with New York, but Damon has
no concerns about any animosity between the two.

Damon won't be joined by the rest of his teammates until Tuesday, but from
what he saw on his first day, he believes he is already a part of something
special.

"Just seeing the look on these guys' faces, they're all excited," Damon said.
"I'm here, and I'm excited to be a part of it. It's a great feeling. I am
looking forward to going to battle with these guys for this team. It's going
to be a great year for us."
