Chien-Ming Wang may not ever smile on the mound, but the way he's pitched this
season, the Yankees are ecstatic. The Yankees have been sticking close to the
Red Sox because of pitching, and Wang is a big part of it.

Wang's latest gem was a 5-1 victory over the Devil Rays last night at Tropicana
Field in which he outdueled All-Star Scott Kazmir. The righthander took a four-
hit shutout into the ninth inning -- extending the Yankees' scoreless streak to
18 innings -- before giving up a pair of one-out singles and being relieved by
Kyle Farnsworth, who allowed a sacrifice fly by Jonny Gomes. Wang (9-4) wound
up allowing one run, six hits and two walks in 81/3 innings.

The win was the Yankees' fourth straight, marking the first time they have
strung together that many victories since they won five consecutive games May
27-31.

Johnny Damon,who entered the game as a pinch runner in the sixth inning,sparked
the offensive breakout with a two-run triple and Melky Cabrera went 3-for-5.
But the Yankees continued their inconsistent offensive ways, leaving 12 on base
-- which makes their recent pitching of utmost importance. "Our pitching has
been a lot better than advertised," Damon said.
Wang's quality start was the fourth straight by Yankees pitchers since Shawn
Chacon imploded in a 19-1 loss to the Indians Tuesday night. Kris Wilson will
try to extend that to five Sunday when he makes his first major-league start in
nearly three years.

For five innings the Yankees and Devil Rays were locked in a scoreless game,
quite similar to the Yankees' 1-0 win over Tampa Bay Friday night -- not too
many hits or scoring opportunities for either team because of the dominant
pitching.
The Yankees broke through in the sixth inning after Jason Giambi led off with a
drive between centerfielder Rocco Baldelli and rightfielder Damon Hollins that
went off Baldelli's glove for an error. The way the night was going, the Yankees
didn't want to waste any kind of scoring chance, so Joe Torre acted decisively. He sent Damon in as a pinch runner and it paid off.
After Kazmir struck out Alex Rodriguez for the first out, Jorge Posada hit a
chopper up the middle over the leaping Kaz.mir and third-base coach Larry
Bowa frantically waved Damon home. A good throw by Baldelli would have meant a
collision at the plate, but the centerfielder's hard throw was wild and well
off target.
The run-scoring single by Posada snapped a personal 0-for-13 stretch and also
seemed to spark the Yankees' on-again, off-again offense. They followed with
consecutive two-run innings for a 5-0 lead, though they also left five on in
those innings.
The big hit in the seventh was a two-run triple by Damon, his first at-bat
since he took himself out of Wednesday night's game with a strained right
abdominal muscle.
With runners on first and second and one out, Damon lined a shot over the head
of first baseman Ty Wigginton and into the rightfield corner, and Melky Cabrera
and Derek Jeter scored without a throw. Damon ran without any sign of injury,
making it to third standing up.
An inning later, the Yankees added two runs on consecutive one-out RBI singles
by Cabrera and Jeter off Edwin Jackson. Andy Phillips and Miguel Cairo started
the inning with singles and moved up on Kevin Thomp.son's sacrifice. It was big for
Phillips because he had just two hits in his previous 31 at-bats.
Wang received plenty of help from his defense. Posada threw out speedy Carl
Crawford in the first and Josh Paul in the fifth, making five of the last six
attempted steals against him unsuccessful.

The victory was the 1,926nd of Torre's managerial career, moving him into a tie
with Casey Stengel for 10th place all-time.
