Blue Jays make it three of four versus Yankees by pounding out 13-5 win http://www.cbc.ca/cp/sports/060723/s0723136.html 18:48:58 EDT Jul 23, 2006 SHI DAVIDI TORONTO (CP) - No euphemisms, no sugar-coating. Johnny Damon went straight to the point on what the Toronto Blue Jays did to his New York Yankees over the weekend. 強尼戴蒙不諱言說藍鳥徹底擊垮洋基。 "We got out brains beat in here," the centre-fielder said in a sullen clubhouse after a 13-5 thrashing Sunday afternoon gave the Blue Jays three out of four in the series. "Some controversy over there - dissension breeds winners. 他在氣氛凝重的球隊休息室裡說。 "It seemed like they pulled together and came out playing with a lot of confidence." That the Blue Jays did, ending a tumultuous week in which they bitterly parted ways with DH-infielder Shea Hillenbrand, blew two-late inning leads in dis- heartening losses to the Texas Rangers and then rallied to slap around a Yankees club that had won five of six coming in. The exclamation point came Sunday when Troy Glaus, Eric Hinske and Reed Johnson each homered in an eight-run third inning that quickly decided things. Vernon Wells added two homers and four RBIs as the Blue Jays (55-43) moved within two games of the Yankees (56-40) for second in AL East before 42,337 at the Rogers Centre. "We had to play a good series with where we were sitting in the standings," said manager John Gibbons. "August is just around the corner and things can still go one way or another. Playing a team ahead of us in our division you've got to play well or you disappear and we did just that. "It was a long, hard week, the big controversy, but the guys stayed focused." The Blue Jays also improved to 5-4 against the Yankees this year and won a series from them in Toronto for the first time since October 2004. They were 6- 12 versus the eight-time AL East champions last year. "It's great for this team's attitude just because of the way the Yankees have handled us in the past," Johnson said. "It feels good to come out with a series victory." Added Wells: "We could have easily taken all four. But you've got to be happy with three." The finale lacked the tension and drama of the previous three days but the Jays weren't complaining after gaining two games on New York in the standings during the series ahead of a 10-game road trip that ends with three dates at Yankee Stadium. Shaun Marcum (1-0) earned his first major-league win in his second start, allowing a three-run homer to Jorge Posada in five otherwise solid innings. He had his problems with a tough lineup, allowing seven hits and a walk, but was able to avoid serious trouble. "It's nice but more importantly we won," said Marcum. "I've always thought since I was brought up last year that I had the stuff to be here. It was just a matter of going out and getting the job done." That wasn't the case for Sidney Ponson (0-1), who was pounded in his first start for the Yankees. The rotund right-hander allowed a two-run shot to Wells in the first and completely fell apart in the third, after Posada's homer had put the Yankees up 3-2 in the top of the inning. Frank Catalanotto opened the frame with a single and after Wells flew out to the wall in left, Glaus smashed his 26th of the season to put the Blue Jays back up. After Lyle Overbay singled and Gregg Zaun walked, manager Joe Torre came out to get Ponson. Reliever Kris Wilson didn't fare much better as Hinske greeted him with a three-run shot, his 10th, that extended the lead to 7-3. Singles by Aaron Hill and John McDonald then set the stage for Johnson, who slammed his sixth of the season. Wells' 26th of the season, a solo shot in the fifth, made it 11-3 before the Yankees picked up a pair against reliever Jeremy Accardo, making his Jays debut after being acquired early Saturday morning from San Francisco for Hillenbrand and reliever Vinnie Chulk. "You know that by no means is it over with that club," said Johnson. "They can put some runs on you in a hurry, so we did a good job of keep tacking on runs on the board and pitchers did a good job of putting up zeroes." Accardo gave up an RBI double to Nick Green and a run-scoring single to Bubba Crosby. The Blue Jays got that back in the seventh when Johnson doubled home McDonald, who had tripled for his third hit of the night, and scored on Wells' sacrifice fly. Not a bad ending for a team that entered the series with questions on whether they'd be able to put aside the Hillenbrand controversy and focus on the Yankees. "Regardless of what's going on outside of the field, it's our job to win ballgames," said Glaus. "The guys weren't intimidated, they went out and played well, played hard and we had a good series all the way around." Notes: All-star right-fielder Alex Rios looked strong while doing some fielding and running drills before the game and will start a rehabilitation assignment with triple-A Syracuse on Monday. The Blue Jays hope he'll be ready to rejoin them Thursday when they open a four-game series in Oakland. Rios has been out since June 28 when he fouled a ball off his leg, leading to a staph infection. .?? .?? Zaun twice had the bat fly out of his hands swinging at Ponson pitches . .??
