Giambi was bothered by his sore wrist in the final months of the season, and had at least three injections. The former AL MVP hit .253 with 37 home runs and 113 RBI, then went 1-for-8 in the playoff loss to Detroit. It has been a tumultuous two weeks for owner George Steinbrenner's club. After winning the first game of their AL Division Series against the Detroit Tigers on Oct. 3, the Yankees lost three straight for a quick exit in a postseason many thought would yield the team's first World Series title since 2000. Soon after the defeat, speculation about manager Joe Torre's job security arose, with initial reports claiming he would be fired. Oct. 10 was a busy day, as Steinbrenner announced that Torre would return as manager, reports surfaced that both pitcher Randy Johnson and Giambi would require offseason surgeries, and general manager Brian Cashman stated that former MVP Alex Rodriguez -- who once again struggled in the postseason -- would remain in New York despite rumors to the contrary. Tragedy struck the on Oct. 11 as pitcher Cory Lidle was killed when a small plane he was traveling in crashed into a Manhattan high-rise. Despite the lack of a World Series title since 2000 or an AL pennant since 2003, the Yankees did win the AL East for the ninth straight season. "Yes we fell short of our goals, but we still are a force to be reckoned with," Cashman said. "We haven't fallen apart. We're not a second-division club."
