Contact hitter Melky earning his stripes

DETROIT -- Melky Cabrera received his second chance with the Yankees because
of their rash of outfield injuries, but he has earned his daily spot in the
lineup because of his fine offensive play. Certainly no one could've foreseen
what this guy means to the offense right now.

但他獲得每天都能先發的機會 卻是因為他的打擊表現

Joe Torre said Cabrera "has made a huge difference for us," and the manager
does not plan to take him out of the lineup anytime soon, let alone send him
back to Triple-A Columbus. The only way Cabrera goes down, Torre said, is if
Hideki Matsui returns.

 Entering last night, Cabrera, 21, was hitting .318 with a .392 on-base
percentage, including a 4-for-6 game Tuesday against Detroit. He has made
everyone forget about last year's debacle, when he looked overmatched in six
games, with the low point coming on the liner by Trot Nixon that Cabrera
dived for and missed, essentially playing it into an inside-the-park home
run.

The difference this season is that the Yankees didn't put undue expectations
on him. Last year they called him up because they wanted someone to catch
balls in center; they said offense was a bonus. But now we know his bat is
his strong suit, not his glove.

Oddly, even though they were looking for someone to run down flies more than
anything, the Yankees abruptly decided to call him up last year because he
was hitting so well for a week and a half at Columbus.

但洋基還是忽然把他叫上來 因為他在三A一個半星期的打擊表現很好

"Everyone always says he came right from Double-A last year, and that's wrong,"
 Double-A Trenton manager Bill Masse said. "The plan was for him to go to
Triple-A for a month and then they would call him up if he did well. But he
just went off offensively."

That original plan was hatched when George Steinbrenner called his
high-ranking team officials to Tampa last June for a few days of
organizational meetings, and Cabrera then sped up the process by hitting .324
with three homers in nine games at Columbus.
這個原始的計畫是在老闆去年六月在Tampa召開的高層會議中決定的
但就在他在3A九場比賽中打擊率.324還有三支全壘打之後 就提早實行

Many youngsters who failed the way Cabrera did last July would not have
responded as well as he has ever since. He impressed the Yankees with his
strong spring training, and he essentially forced the Yankees to call him up
by hitting so well at Columbus.
很多小將不能像小卡布去年七月那樣有機會 是因為沒他表現得好

Cabrera hit .385 (47-for-122) with six doubles, two triples and four home
runs in 31 games for Columbus this season, but he didn't start out
particularly well for the Yankees. He was 4-for-his-first-15, but they
weren't exactly convincing hits.

"About a week or so in, maybe a little longer, I was looking and wondering,
even though we weren't ready to pull the trigger," Torre said. "I was
wondering, and I talked to Donnie [Mattingly], and he said, 'He's all right.'
Donnie has an eye for that, and he was right."

The first real sign that Cabrera is a different player from last season's
version was in Boston May 24, when the Yankees batted him leadoff in place of
an ailing Johnny Damon. Torre said they had concerns whether that would be
too much pressure for Cabrera to handle. Cabrera, however, put those to rest
by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Masse said. "This kid has the mentality that not much bothers him. He's
showed he can rebound."

As Cabrera is becoming more comfortable in the clubhouse, he's doing the same
at the plate, and power could be next to come. Entering last night's game, he
had two doubles and a triple in his last five games, and on Wednesday night,
he lined one to the wall.

"He doesn't swing and miss very often, which is very unusual for a young
player like that," Torre said. Entering last night, the last time Cabrera
swung and missed was when he struck out in the fifth inning Sunday, spanning
17 plate appearances.

He's still a shy 21-year-old trying to find his way, basically following
Robinson Cano everywhere he goes, but it's clear the Yankees are happy with
who he is this time around. Said Torre, "He seems to be gaining more and more
confidence all the time."
