BOSTON, Aug. 20 — When they first worked out Melky Cabrera, the Yankees
wasted no time signing him. It was the fall of 2001, and Cabrera was 17 years
old. The Yankees invited him to their academy in the Dominican Republic,
knowing another team would watch him the next day.

The team Cabrera was scheduled to visit next, Blakeley said, was the Boston
Red Sox. So as soon as he hit those home runs, the Yankees signed him for
$125,000 before Cabrera could even leave their complex.

It is proving to be money well spent. Cabrera came into Sunday’s game against
the Red Sox with a .291 average, more walks than strikeouts (39 to 37) and an
American League-leading 12 outfield assists.

“He seems to have a calm about him,” Manager Joe Torre said Friday, after
Cabrera reached base five times in the second game of the doubleheader. “
He's having fun playing the game. He’s certainly been a life saver for us,
no question. He’s had great at-bats.”

When Hideki Matsui broke his wrist on May 11, the Yankees knew they would
need to play Cabrera regularly in left field. Cabrera, already promoted for
the injured Gary Sheffield, had been all but an afterthought since a shaky
week in the majors last season.

“I didn’t know enough about him to really know how he was going to perform
when he was called up,” Matsui said through an interpreter. “But I’m not
really surprised at how he’s been doing. He seems like he’s a very
talented, well-balanced player.”

Even Torre admitted he had no idea Cabrera threw as well as he does. On
Friday night, with the Yankees trailing by three runs in the fifth inning,
Cabrera cut down Mark Loretta at the plate. It kept the game close at a
critical point.

“I never recognized that arm when we had him in spring training,” Torre
said. “All of a sudden, he’s dominant out there. Not only does he have a
strong arm, but he’s accurate.”

Blakeley said the biggest surprise about Cabrera was that he walked more often
 in the majors than he did in the minors. Cabrera could always put the ball
in play, Blakeley said, but playing in a lineup with patient hitters like
Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu has made an impact.

“Normally, when young players get behind in the count, they have a tendency
to be a little overanxious,” Torre said. “He’s walked on a lot of
occasions when he’s been behind 0-2 or 1-2. To me, that means he has a great
deal of confidence in his bat control.”

At 22, Cabrera is succeeding at the same age Derek Jeter was in 1996, when he
won the American League Rookie of the Year award. Jeter said that it was
easier to thrive with low expectations, and that he saw the same thing in
second baseman Robinson Cano and Cabrera, whom he calls Leche, the Spanish
word for milk.

“When I was coming up, we had so many veterans that the only thing they
expected of me was to go out there and play defense,” Jeter said. “Leche
and Cano came up and they weren’t expected to carry the team, just fit in
and do the job. Not only have they fit in, they’ve carried us at times.”

If Matsui is healthy next season, Cabrera will lose his starting job in left.
But the Yankees could still get him 400 at-bats by rotating players in and
out of the designated hitter spot and using Cabrera in the outfield. He has
already proved he belongs.

但球隊仍然可以靠著讓野手輪流擔任指定打擊 讓小卡布擔任外野手 並有400次的打席
他已經證明他屬於那兒

“We saw what happened this year: we lost two guys — like that — to
injury,” General Manager Brian Cashman said. “I’m glad we have him to give
us flexibility. Clearly, he’s a quality major leaguer.”
