Yankee outfielder is a fast-learning student of the game

Maria Theresa wanted her son to study something, anything.

Maybe he could be an engineer or a scientist. Maybe he could go into medicine
like she did or maybe her baby boy could be politician or a lawyer when he
grew up. Dr. Melky Cabrera. As a nurse, she liked the sound of that.
Baseball? No, not an option.
也許他會是工程師或科學家 或許他會去唸醫學院 就像她自己
也許她的小兒子長大後會從政或當律師

Melky had other plans and now, even Maria Theresa has to be happy her son
didn't always obey her. He's gone from Melky the rebel to Melky the starting
left fielder for the New York Yankees. Mom could not be happier.
現在牛奶弟有別的計畫 甚至Maria Theresa有些竊喜兒子沒有都聽她的
牛奶弟從叛逆的小孩轉變成紐約洋基隊的先發左外野手 而他媽媽再開心不過了

"My mother is everything to me," Cabrera, 22, said. "She is a tremendous
person and because of her I am here. She has taken care of me, worked real
hard with me and is my inspiration. She didn't like it when I told her I
didn't like school and I wanted to be a player, but she understands now. She
knows my dream was to be a baseball player."
22歲的小卡布說"我媽是我的一切 她是個了不起的人 也因為她 我才能在這兒

Cabrera's fantasy has come true, but he's the first to admit that at times he
still feels like he is dreaming. The numbers show he could be the real deal.
In his first 84 games with the Yankees this season, Cabrera was hitting .290
with seven home runs and 40 RBIs as the club's left fielder. He joined the
club after injuries to outfielders Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield and soon
became a staple in the outfield with his solid play on offense and defense.
小卡布的夢想終於實現 但一開始他就承認有時候還會覺得自己在作夢

contenders, and that being said, it is pretty incredible that the youngster
comes from the Minor Leagues," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "He is an
everyday player for us."

"He's a young man, just a kid, but he has been a big help for us," Yankees

That's where Cabrera's teammates come in. Whether he is following Robinson
Cano around the clubhouse or chatting with Bernie Williams about the finer
points of being a Major Leaguer, Cabrera is absorbing the experience. It's
not rare to see him watching video with Alex Rodriguez or sitting at his
locker picking the brain of Derek Jeter. Cabrera says he wants to be the
best, so he listens to the best.

He says he learns by asking questions. He is also advised by his veteran
teammates before questions arise.

"The longer he is here, guys will pitch him differently, look for his weak
spots, so I tell him to make sure he stays in the game," Williams said. "At
some point during a three- or four-hour game, he has the chance to change it.
I want him to be ready for that and not be afraid of success."
老威說"他在這兒越久 大家會看到他的弱點 大家會教他不同的東西 所以我告訴他

"[Current Mets manager and former Yankees coach] Willie Randolph told me a
long time ago not to be afraid of success, because sometimes players have
success and then have doubts that it is just temporary," Williams continued.
"Your mind plays games with you, but you have to remember you are here for a
reason and you can play. The normal thing is to be out there playing good.
The abnormality is to struggle. Melky needs to know that."

He's getting there. Cabrera plays with an inner confidence but is humble
enough to admit he has a long way to go to reach his potential. From learning
how to prepare for each contest in the batting cage to realizing how prepared
each opposing pitcher is to maintaining his focus, Cabrera says he is
developing into a pupil of the game. In a way, he is the student his mom
always wanted him to be, just in an entirely different type of field.
他就快做到了 小卡布很有自信但他也很謙虛 認為要發揮自己的潛能還有很長的路要走

"I feel like being here is a blessing from God," Cabrera said. "I am here
with a lot of superstars, Jeter, Posada, Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi. I
want to keep playing a long time with them and I think I can. I really
appreciate the opportunity but I'm not happy just to be here, I want to be
here for a lot of years."

He just might. Cabrera has the talent on the field and his personality off of
it to keep him around for a while. Quiet by nature, Cabrera says he can also
be a jokester -- although most of his jokes are in Spanish and aimed at the
Spanish-speaking players. He describes himself as reserved, but not shy. He's
fun but not obnoxious. If he looks like a little boy following around his
teammates like big brothers, it's because sometimes he feels that way. Not
long ago, he was a teenager in the Dominican Republic. His mom still calls
him "Nino," little boy.

他形容自己保守但不會害羞 他很有趣但不會過動
如果他看起來像是隊友後面的跟屁蟲 那就是他 因為不久前 他還是多明尼加的青少年
他媽媽還叫他Nino--小男孩

"When I go on the field, I ask God for strength to go forward and help this
team," Cabrera said. "I'm young, but I'm not afraid. That is how I was
raised, not to be afraid."
小卡布說"當我上場時 我請求上天賜與我力量向前 幫助球隊 我很年輕但我並不害怕
這就是我從小被教導的 無懼"
