December 16, 2006 -- If the Yankees trade Melky Cabrera for Pirates reliever
Mike Gonzalez - a deal that is getting hot - there could be a spot for Bernie
Williams on the 2007 Yankees.
If Cabrera isn't dealt, Williams' stay in pinstripes is likely finished after
16 years.
Recently, the Yankees, Pirates and Braves discussed a three-way trade that
would have sent the left-handed Gonzalez from the Pirates to the Braves and
then to the Yankees. Atlanta would have sent Adam LaRoche to the Pirates and
the Braves would have gotten Scott Proctor and Cabrera for Gonzalez, a
gas-throwing 28-year-old reliever.
Now, according to somebody with knowledge of Pittsburgh's thinking, the
Yankees and Pirates are talking about a swap because the Yankees didn't want
to give up Proctor and Cabrera for Gonzalez. The Pirates are high on Cabrera
and want a minor-league prospect added to the pot.
"They can make that deal [Cabrera for Gonzalez] right now if they want," a
source said of the Yankees.
But do they?
With an aging rotation that includes Carl Pavano's litany of injuries, not to
mention 43-year-old Randy Johnson coming off back surgery, a deep bullpen is
a must. And that's before Roger Clemens (45 in August) possibly surfaces in
June.
Is giving up the 22-year-old switch-hitting Cabrera for Gonzalez, who has
never pitched in a meaningful game beyond May and has spent his entire
four-year career in the NL with the Pirates, a good move? Gonzalez converted
24 of 24 save chances and opposing batters hit an anemic .213 against him.
Lefties were worse, .163. He missed the final five weeks with tendinitis.
While Cabrera helped save the Yankees season when he played very well (.280
batting average/solid defense) as Hideki Matsui's replacement, he would be
the fourth outfielder this coming year and you wonder how he will adapt to
not getting regular work.
And it's not like the Yankees have an immediate opening beyond the 2007
season. Matsui and Johnny Damon are signed through 2009 and while Bobby Abreu
is in the final year of a contract the Yankees will likely turn right field
over to stud prospect Jose Tabata as early as 2008.
On other fronts, having already requested free agent Doug Mientkiewicz'
medical records from Dr. Robert Watkins, who operated on the left-handed
hitting first baseman's back after the season, the Yankees want to meet with
Mientkiewicz face to face. The meeting will likely be in New York next week
and a one-year contract offer could follow. Mientkiewicz made $1.85 million
last year.
Andy Pettitte is slated to take a physical Monday or Tuesday. If that goes
well, the $16 million deal for one year with a player option at $16 million
for 2008 will become official. Expect the Yankees to have a press conference
late next week, possibly Thursday.
As for the 38-year-old Williams, who batted .281 in 131 games a year ago, GM
Brian Cashman said yesterday he was planning on talking to agent Scott Boras
and Williams.
"At some point, just not [yesterday]," Cashman said.
Williams was at Yankee Stadium last week and told people he expected to know
shortly if he had a future in The Bronx.
