BOSTON - They are a couple of crazy comebacks - one gritty, one lucky - from
losing eight of their last nine games. Injuries have turned the outfield
into a tryout camp for marginal prospects and waiver-wire pickups like
Terrence Long, while making Bernie Williams practically indispensable.
Even at 24-19, the Yankees are only a couple of more losses to the Red Sox
away from a full-blown crisis.

Maybe Gary Sheffield, likely to be back in the lineup tonight, can come
riding to the rescue. But for now, it suddenly feels like real trouble

Sox victory here last night - a game that was 9-1 when Schilling left after
eight innings.

It's not only that the Yanks have lost four of five to the Sox this season,
and six of their last nine games overall - even with those improbable
comebacks against the Rangers and Mets. It's their need for top-flight
pitching, especially vital with Johnson stuck in the muck of mediocrity and
the lineup short-handed. Somebody besides Mike Mussina has to deliver, and,
Johnson aside, the great hope is not Jaret Wright, or Shawn Chacon, but last
night's losing pitcher, Chien-Ming Wang.

It is a lot to ask of a player in his first full season in the big leagues,
even if he does have a 94-mph sinking fastball. The Yankees are convinced
that he has the poise to handle such responsibility, but even if it's true,
last night was a reminder that at best he needs time to grow into such a role.

With runners on second and third in the third inning, Wang went to 3-0 on
David Ortiz, and, in a situation where he shouldn't have given in, he
grooved a fastball for Big Papi.

Whatever Wang's thought process, Ortiz made him pay by lining a two-run
single to left, putting the Sox ahead 2-1. Costly as that was, Wang's next
mistake was more grievous.

Ahead 0-2 on Manny Ramirez, Wang and Jorge Posada decided to try to get the
Sox slugger to chase a high fastball. Instead, Wang left it belt-high and
Ramirez made him pay, crushing a 93-mph fastball into the center-field
bleachers, a bomb of some 440 feet.

But it was a mistake in strategy as well as execution, which Joe Torre
basically admitted.

He tried something up, "which is not his neighborhood," Torre said. "It's
Manny's neighborhood, but not (Wang's). It's not a place that he lives."

In other words, better to try to get Ramirez to chase a sinker. Torre said
he wasn't criticizing either Wang or Posada, but he surely wasn't endorsing
the thought process, either.

"I don't second-guess the pitch," Torre said. "But he can't miss up there."

He also needs to pitch more carefully to Ortiz and Ramirez, the Yankee-killers
in a lineup that is otherwise unimposing - especially on a night when
Schilling was dealing.

That too was bad news for the Yankees. Just when it seemed he was having his
own Randy Johnson-like problems with velocity and age, he turned in a
dominant eight innings that made him look like the Schilling who pitched the
Sox to a world championship in 2004.

So much for his slump. He had been 2-2 with a 6.53 ERA in five starts since
a 133-pitch outing in Cleveland a month ago, fueling speculation that the
high pitch-count had taken a toll on him.

Schilling ridiculed such speculation publicly, but he admitted his fastball
isn't what it was a few years ago, and as a result, he was having trouble
putting hitters away.

He had little trouble last night, handling the Yankees so efficiently that
he threw only 99 pitches in eight innings. The Sox made some gorgeous plays

last year - and no small factor, considering the problems in the field the
Yankees have had lately.

All in all, it was a night when the Yankees looked overmatched. Injuries are
part of it. Maybe Sheffield can begin to swing the pendulum back the other
way.

But ultimately it's going to fall on the pitching. Wang, the big hope, didn'
t look ready to bear that burden last night. Now it's Wright tonight, and
Johnson tomorrow.
但最終還是會落在投手身上 眾望所歸的小王昨晚看起來還沒準備好挑起這個大擔子
而今晚就看Wright(**還好 還不錯**) 還有明天的RJ

One loss from high drama, two from a state of crisis.
