Wang provides innings Torre needs to rest bullpen

Chien-Ming Wang retired the first 11 Royals yesterday, and by that time the
Yankees were cruising with an 8-0 lead. But what mattered most to Joe Torre
wasn't precision but length.

"This was a good outing for us. We need to rest the bullpen," Torre said.

Wang, who pitched seven innings, struggled a bit with pitches up in the
fifth and sixth - when he allowed four runs and four of the five doubles he
surrendered - but was strong. He threw 105 pitches and still was in the low
90s at the end of his stint.

Torre did not want to use his prime setup men, Scott Proctor and Kyle

A pain-free bullpen session on Friday convinced Torre that Jaret Wright can
make his scheduled start today. "This keeps him on his regular day, and
that's important," Torre said of Wright, who has had four straight promising
starts.

ready to come off the DL.

Gary Sheffield continues to be the DH, but Torre said Sheffield is getting
closer to returning to rightfield. "I told him to let me know when he's ready,"
Torre said, adding that the addition of veteran Terrence Long negates the
need to rush back Sheffield. Plus, Melky Cabrera and Bernie Williams are
hitting well ... Johnny Damon (0-for-5) was the only starter without a hit
and a run yesterday ... Alex Rodriguez's two homers gave him 442 for his
career, tying him with Dave Kingman for 33rd place on the all-time list. He
has 13 this season ... Jorge Posada took batting practice and was available
to pinch hit "in a desperate situation," Torre said.
