NEW YORK — A cynic might suggest that Alex Rodriguez had his best game for
Seattle since he left after the 2000 season

But despite A-Rod's efforts on Monday — three throwing errors and an 0-for-4
performance that included a bases-loaded strikeout against rookie right-hander
Mark Lowe —the Mariners were unable to twist their fate on this trip thus far.

Losing to the Blue Jays Sunday, Adrian Beltre tried to tempt a young runner off
third with the infield-fly rule in force. On Monday, the Mariners couldn't make
the hidden-ball trick click.

With Jorge Posada on second and two outs in the sixth, Yuniesky Betancourt kept
the ball while pitcher Jarrod Washburn stayed off the rubber.

When Posada didn't budge, the shortstop flipped the ball back to the pitcher.

"Posada didn't say anything to me," Betancourt said through translator Gillian
Hageman. "It's worth a try. You never know. It worked for me in Cuba."

While Seattle could not expand on A-Rod's troubles or a first-inning error by
catcher Posada, the Yankees did well with one of the Mariners' three miscues
and scored three two-out runs in the second that proved the difference in the
game.

On this 1-3 trip, opponents have scored 18 runs — 11 with two out and nine of
those 11 after there were two out and nobody on base.

The latter frustration included New York's second inning, when Andy Phillips
singled after Washburn had retired the first two men. With Richie Sexson
holding the runner on at first, Melky Cabrera ripped a hot ball up the first-
base line, leaving two in scoring position.

"I had just turned my head toward home after leaving the bag and the ball was
on me," Sexson said.

Miguel Cairo, who was a Mariner for 19 days between trades in the winter of
1995, grounded a single through the left side for two runs and took second on
the throw home.

Johnny Damon then flipped a 3-2 pitch into left to single in the third run.

Washburn (4-10) allowed only one earned run. He has allowed two or fewer in 11
of his 19 starts, and just four in his last three starts. But he has gotten no
wins, as Seattle has afforded him just five runs of support.

"Not getting runs doesn't frustrate me," he said. "All that frustrates me is
losing as a team. Losing frustrates me."

Wang got the balls hit where he needed. Inducing 16 ground-ball outs and double
plays in the fourth and sixth innings, he used his good sinker to great effect.

After falling behind 3-1, the Mariners had chances when A-Rod threw away
Beltre's leadoff grounder in the fourth; with the bases full and two outs in
the fifth; and with three singles and a second run scored in the sixth. But
each time, Wang worked free on grounders.

If there was a highlight for Seattle, it was the continued fine work of Lowe,
who worked out of his second bases-loaded jam in three games in the big leagues.

Replacing Washburn in the seventh, he struck out A-Rod on sliders, then got
Posada to pop up to end the threat.

Even at Yankee Stadium, Lowe said, "You can't think it's anything special or
try to do more than you're capable. No doubt it was the biggest crowd I've ever
pitched for, but it felt like any other game to me."
