http://paullebowitz.mlblogs.com/ Wang Legitimate Cy Young Candidate For a pitcher who was considered more project than prospect as recently as eighteen months ago, Chien-Ming Wang has vaulted himself into a legitimate position to contend for the American League Cy Young Award. Wang has pitched brilliantly this entire season and came within one pitch to Ryan Zimmerman to having a 14-3 record instead of 13-4. Add into that the game against Baltimore in which he pitched in emergency relief and recorded a save, and you have an extremely valuable commodity who does everything within his power to help his team win. The "experts" around New York radio and print outlets openly scoffed at Wang as recently as earlier this season; now, the honest ones are backtracking on their comments and the recidivist historians are conveniently forgetting or amending what they had originally said. With their condescending attitudes, lack of knowledge and accountability, these people continually opine about that which they know nothing as though they know everything. Now, they have again been proven wrong with the continued stellar performance of Chien-Ming Wang. It seems so long ago that in the middle of his rookie season, Wang went on the disabled list with shoulder woes after feeling pain one morning and the rumor mill was churning out stories as to the severity of the injury and that it was likely that Wang would have surgery and be out until 2007. But, he returned and returned well. Now, he's among the league leaders in wins and has become, essentially, the Yankees starter number 1A along with Mike Mussina. It is difficult to judge players that come from the Pacific rim and their abilities to adjust to the majors. One may turn into Ichiro; one may turn into Hideki Matsui; one may turn into Kaz Matsui; one may turn into Hideki Irabu. And it was even more difficult to come up with a legitimate projection on Wang because, while those other players were coming from the Japanese League, Wang was coming from Taiwan, where the quality of the play is less than that of Japan. That may be why it took Wang until he was 25 to reach the big leagues and until 26 to truly blossom. But now, he's arrived. He throws strikes, he's quietly determined and he has presence on the mound. (Carl Pavano take note.) I'm just curious as to what those "experts" are going to say at the end of the season if Wang wins 20 games. They'll probably conveniently forget the negative comments upon his arrival. They knew from their extensive experience in scouting that he was eventually going to make it, right? At least, that's what they'll try to lead people to believe. Massive egos and infinitesimal knowledge---a perfect combination for sports talk radio.
