Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Yankees in 2000, the Taiwan native did not receive the hype that typically surrounds young men wearing pinstripes. But without Wang this season, the Yankees would be lost. On a pitching staff that features Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson, Wang was tied for the team lead in victories as the Yankees headed to Baltimore for a three- game weekend series. With a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, Wang moved to 13-4 with a 3.58 ERA, ranking among the league leaders in an assortment of pitching categories. And while Wang had just 48 strikeouts in 156 innings, his sinker was proving to be among the most dominating in baseball. Entering weekend series, Wang had a better ground ball-to-fly ball ratio than any major league pitcher but renowned sinkerballers Brandon Webb (Arizona) and Derek Lowe (Los Angeles). Since May, especially, Wang has been an anchor for a Yankees staff that had endured its share of problems and ailments.
