※ 引述《vvvbbb (尚好是安ㄋㄟ)》之銘言: : http://0rz.net/3a1Gr : Yankees' pitcher establishes himself : By PETER ABRAHAM : THE JOURNAL NEWS : (Original publication: August 8, 2006) : The Yankees signed Chien-Ming Wang on May 5, 2000 and sent him to pitch for : their Class A team on Staten Island five weeks later. The right-hander from : Taiwan spoke no English and had never been to the United States before. : The baseball transition was fairly uncomplicated, as Wang needed only a few : starts to establish himself as one of the best players on the team. What he : couldn't understand was why his teammates looked askance at him every time he : lit up a cigarette. "I was surprised. Everything was : different in the United States. But baseball is the same." : From those halting early steps, Wang has become one of the best pitchers in : the game. He carries a 13-4 record and 3.58 ERA into tonight's start against : the Chicago White Sox and has not allowed a run in 18 consecutive innings. : "I can't imagine where we would be without him," manager Joe Torre said. "The : kid has been something special. I'd like to say I knew what we had, but he : was a mystery to a lot of us." 他說:"在台灣,每個人在抽煙,我很驚訝, 因為在美國每件事情都不太一樣,但是棒球 是一樣的" 從這些蹣跚的起步開始,小王已經成為了比賽中最好的投手之一,他帶著 13勝4負,自責分率3.58,並且連續18局無失分的的成績將在今晚遇上芝加哥白襪, (桌子敲三下^^) Torre說:"我不能想像如果我們沒有了他會變怎樣,那孩子一直都是那麼特別,我想說 我們有著什麼,但是他對於我們大不人來說仍然是個謎" : In his first extended interview in English, the 26-year-old Wang revealed his : fondness for rap music, an admiration for Roger Clemens and how playing : basketball helped lead to a career in baseball and meeting his future wife. : "I never thought all this would happen," he said. : The 6-foot-3 Wang was always tall for his age and played basketball at : Chong-syue Elementary School. The school's coach doubled as the baseball : coach and encouraged Wang to try another sport. : That led to high school stardom and a scholarship to play in college. It was : there that scouts from the Yankees, Braves, Mariners and other major-league : teams discovered him. "He was a little bigger than : everybody else and had this nice easy motion. Once he started throwing 94, I : called back and said, 'I think there's a kid here we need to consider.' " : Atlanta offered more money, but Wang accepted $1.9 million to sign with the : Yankees because he enjoyed watching Clemens on television. : "I went to see him when he was with Staten Island and asked him what I could : do for him," Cox said. "He wanted a rice cooker, so I ran over to the : Wal-Mart and got him one. He has always been a simple guy." But he moved quickly : through the organization after recovering, pitching 39 games at Class AA and : only 12 for Class AAA Columbus before the Yankees promoted him early last : season, mostly out of desperation. : "I'm thankful in a way that he was under the radar a little bit," general : manager Brian Cashman said. "He was somebody we might have considered trading : at one point." : He missed two months with a sore shoulder last summer, but has shown no signs : of fatigue since. : "I'm stronger now," said Wang, who worked out diligently over the winter. "My : shoulder is OK." : The defining moment of this season came on June 18 in Washington, when Wang : allowed a two-run walk-off homer by Ryan Zimmerman in a 3-2 loss against the : Nationals. : "I've never been that mad at anything," Wang said. "My whole life. I wanted : to cry." : Teammate Mike Mussina took Wang aside a day later and told him not to let one : pitch shatter his confidence. : "I know when I was younger I wondered whether I belonged in the big leagues : and whether I could pitch well for six months," Mussina said. "Once you feel : good about yourself, everything else becomes easier to deal with, including : losses like that. I think he's over that hump." Now fans stop him and ask for an autograph when he : ventures into Manhattan, and the Taiwanese national flag has been hung on : railings at Yankee Stadium when he pitches. : Wang and his wife of three years, Chia-Ling, have learned how to handle the : fame. : "We go to Queens with to eat," Wang said. "More Chinese people, good : restaurants." : In Taiwan, Wang's success in New York has made him the most popular athlete : in the country. So many fans gathered outside the home of his parents last : winter that Wang and his family fled to a mountain resort on the western side : of the island. "Too many people." : Wang recently helped auction off some signed baseball cards to raise money : for charities in Taiwan. He also donated baseball equipment to five schools : in the Hualien province and filmed a commercial to promote tourism. : "It's a little crazy," he said. "Everybody knows me now in Taiwan. But here I : play baseball and watch TV with my wife. Just baseball and wife. Baseball, : wife." : Wang also enjoys filling up his iPod with rap. Music is one piece of American : culture he has embraced. : "Snoop Dogg," he said.
