Wang to open series against Tigers

While the Yankees have built their largest divisional lead of the season, the
Tigers have seen theirs shrivel.

So, although the Tigers still have the best record in baseball, the Yankees are
closer to the playoffs with a 6 1/2-game lead over the Red Sox.

The two first-place teams will clash in the Bronx on Tuesday as the Yankees and
the Tigers open a three-game series that should give some insight into which is
the American League's best team.
兩支球隊將在週二於紐約展開三場比賽的系列戰，以決定何者是美聯最佳球隊。
Each team is coming off a tough week. Despite beating the Angels in the series
finale Sunday, the Yankees have lost two straight series since sweeping Boston
in five straight. The Tigers are also coming off a win, but lost four straight
games before that.
雙方都剛從戰況不佳的一週走出。洋基雖然在週日打敗天使，卻是已經連輸兩個系列賽。

A month ago, the Tigers held an 8 1/2-game lead in the Central, while the
Yankees were 1 1/2 games behind Boston. Now the Tigers have seen their lead
shrink to just five games over the Twins.

雙城五場。
The Yankees are 16-11 in August, while the Tigers are 12-14. In their only
other meeting this season, the Yankees took three of four in Detroit.

But Yankees manager Joe Torre doesn't see the Tigers' recent troubles as the
start of a major slide that many baseball fans have been predicting.

"We're getting to the point in the schedule where it's becoming taxing," Torre
said. "I don't think it's the pressure as much as the wear and tear of what
they've gone through and what the demands are. They're still a very good club;
they've done too many things to just go away."

Torre could have been speaking about his own team. Monday was its first off-day
since Aug. 7. Torre said his team was exhausted after the road trip and 21
games in 20 days.

But the Yankees won't have much time to rest. Even after facing Detroit, the
Yankees will begin a three-game set with the Twins, the team chasing the
Tigers' tail.

"I think we always have to do that, especially this time of year," Torre said
of facing the top competition. "It's going to come down to pitching, to how
well we can hold up until we get [Mike Mussina] back."

The Yankees will send Chien-Ming Wang and his 15 wins to the mound to begin the
series and follow with Randy Johnson and Jaret Wright. The Tigers will counter
with Nate Robertson, Wilfredo Ledezma and Jeremy Bonderman.

Pitching matchup
DET: LHP Nate Robertson (11-10, 4.10 ERA)
Robertson will be moved up one day to start the opener but he will still be on
the normal four days' rest. He allowed 10 runs in 6 2/3 innings against the
White Sox in his last start.
NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (15-5, 3.81 ERA)
Wang pulled out of a three-game skid in his last start, going seven innings
while allowing just two runs against the Mariners. He allowed five runs in four
innings against the Tigers on June 1.
Player to watch
Alex Rodriguez is 6-for-16 (.375) with a homer, double, triple and five RBIs
against Robertson in his career. However, Rodriguez went 1-for-15 with 10
strikeouts in the Yankees' series against the Angels.
