PROCTOR IGNORES RUMORS
July 30, 2006 -- Reliever Scott Proctor has heard all the rumors about his
being traded before tomorrow's deadline. But whatever the odds of his being
dealt, they got smaller after Yankees target Wilson Betemit came off the
market Friday night. And after the Bombers staff was strafed 19-6 by Tampa
Bay yesterday, they may have gotten smaller still.
With Atlanta having traded Betemit to the Dodgers for Danys Baez, and with
pinstriped pitching looking less than imposing - coughing up 19 runs for the
second time this year and only the fifth time in Stadium history - it begs
the question of whether the Yankees can do without an arm as valuable and
durable as Proctor's.
"It wouldn't surprise me if nothing happened," Joe Torre said. "I'm not
sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.
When asked if he thought the rumors were affecting Proctor, he quipped, "I
hope it has; he's pitched pretty damn good."
Which is more than can be said of the Yankees yesterday, with Randy Johnson
bludgeoned for six runs, inconsistent Shawn Chacon five and rusty Mike Myers
three without recording a single out. Proctor, who did not pitch yesterday,
is 3-2 with a 4.08 ERA, and led the AL in appearances and AL relievers in
innings.
"A lot of what you hear is B.S.," Proctor said. "Whether I'm here Aug. 1 is
out of my control. Other people are paid to make that decision.
"I've got one job and that's to get people out. I'm no genius; I can only
focus on one thing at a time. If I'm on the mound, focusing on what's
happening in somebody's office isn't going to help."
Philadelphia is interested, but with Kyle Farnsworth's achy back and Octavio
Dotel's ongoing elbow rehab, where would the Yanks replace the three outs
Proctor provides to bridge to Mariano Rivera?
"I did hear [about Betemit]. Somebody said, 'I guess you made escape No. 1,"
Proctor said. "You kid with it. (Chien-Ming) Wang and I joke; we have a bet
as to whether I'll be here or not. You've just got to make light of it,
otherwise it's a mental grind and it can take its toll."
Johnny Damon said, "I think we're all right. This team is good enough to win
it," but admitted, "I know everybody's going to be glued to their TVs."
