YANKEES Proctor blows save in nightcap Yankees split doubleheader with the visiting Tigers. BY JIM BAUMBACH Newsday Staff Writer August 30, 2006, 4:11 PM EDT One strike away from an uplifting doubleheader sweep of the American League-leading Tigers, the Yankees saw things go sour very quickly, leaving them with one painful case of whiplash. Craig Monroe's two-out homer off Scott Proctor in the ninth sent the Tigers to a 5-3 win over the Yankees in the nightcap, taking away the good feelings from a smooth 2-0 opening win. Proctor was forced into action to close the second game because Kyle Farnsworth's balky back locked up in between games and Joe Torre didn't want to use Mariano Rivera twice in the same day. So with the Yankees looking to protect a one-run lead in the ninth, Proctor came in and struggled, saying he didn't pitch with the same aggressiveness that has made him so effective. Proctor walked two in the inning, and the most frustrating of which was a two-out walk given to Curtis Granderson. He fouled off consecutive full-count pitches before ball four, and then Monroe hit a first-pitch slider up in the zone over the leftfield wall. "That's why it's 27 outs, I guess," Torre said. Torre made reference multiple times to how close they came to "stealing" the win, considering they had only three hits. But given the unpredictable state of their bullpen, the one-run win in the nightcap would have been even more impressive. Everything started out so well in the afternoon when Chien-Ming Wang made another case to include his name among the contenders for the AL Cy Young Award. Wang improved to 16-5 by tossing 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks. He gave the bullpen a break, as Proctor threw only one pitch for the final out in the eighth and Rivera tossed 14 pitches in a scoreless ninth. But with the Yankees ahead of the Red Sox by eight games, using Rivera twice in the day wasn't appealing. "I have to look at the big picture," Torre said. "This game wasn't an October game. That's when you throw all the rules out." Looking ahead to October was partly why Torre deemed Farnsworth unavailable, too. Farnsworth felt a twinge in his back between games but thought he could pitch. Torre opted against it. "I thought I could have gone out there," Farnsworth said, "but Joe said otherwise." Still, Farnsworth's back is an issue because it has cropped up before and there's no way to know when it will come up again. While he was sporting a large ice pack around his lower back, Farnsworth stood in front of his locker and insisted that the tightness he felt was not that bad. He beleived he could pitch today, and Torre didn't rule it out. Before Proctor came in and blew the save, which he called "embarrassing," the Yankees did so much to get that one-run lead. Jaret Wright pitched longer than he has all season, lasting 6 1/3 innings and giving up two runs. Derek Jeter's two-run double sparked a three-run sixth inning to open the Yankees' one-run lead. Brian Bruney stranded runners on second and third in the seventh and Ron Villone left men on first and second in the eighth. That carried the positive theme from the first game, when Wang once again placed his stamp as the Yankees' best pitcher. Wang's 16 wins ties him with Toronto's Roy Halladay and Chicago's Jon Garland for the American League lead, and Wang was rewarded with a resounding standing ovation from the 18,167 fans in the first game. "I was very happy about that," Wang said. Wang has won eight of his last nine decisions since July 8, leads the team with 187 innings and his ERA fell to 3.66. He was backed by Craig Wilson's leadoff homer in the fifth -- his first RBI since Aug. 13 -- and Jason Giambi's sacrifice fly later that inning. Wang also continued his dominance at home, improving to 11-2 in 115 1/3 innings. -- 我的可愛女兒們 http://0rz.net/321AC -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 211.23.177.142
