Some tidbits from Tampa Bay


* Robinson Cano since he returned from the DL: 64 of 176 (.364), 45 RBI, 31
extra-base hits in 44 games. He needs 30 plate appearances over the final
nine games to qualify for the batting title.

* Chien-Ming Wang is 9-2 in 13 starts after the Yankees have lost. The
demanding Taiwanese media asked Joe Torre last night why the Wanger gave up
a run in the first inning. "Well, it was only one," a bemused Torre said.

* Ironman Scott Proctor has appeared in 80 games, six short of the team
record set by Paul Quantrill in 2004. He won't break the record . . . we think.

* You have to give Brian Cashman credit for guys like Brian Bruney and Aaron
Guiel. In the 33 games in which he had had an at-bat for the Yankees, Guiel
is 19 of 74 (.257) with four homers and 11 RBI. That's pretty decent
production for a guy claimed on waivers from Kansas City.

* I think Tampa Bay is going in the right direction under new owner (and
Springsteen fan) Stu Sternberg. But the Rays have lost 10 of their last 11 and
are staggering to the finish. There were 26,337 fans here last night and I'd
wager 20,000 of them were Yankee fans.

* The Rajah of Rehab was largely ignored by his teammates yesterday. The
Yankees made Pavano show up but he was not on the field for batting practice
or in the dugout for the game. I'd be surprised if he was still with the club
by the start of 2007. The Yankees will pick up $15 million and dump him on
somebody.
