When he finally gets well enough to fly from Tampa, Carl Pavano will discover
he not only lost his place in the Yankees' pitching rotation, but also in the
Yankees' clubhouse.
當Carl Pavano終於痊癒從Tampa飛回紐約 將發現他失去的不只是先發投手輪值中的位置
還有球員俱樂部裡的

He was moved three lockers down, to a corner stall, a shift both symbolic and
coincidental in nature. Symbolic because the corner spot is stashed away and
almost invisible, much like Pavano since he signed with the club. Coincidental
 because the locker previously belonged to Kevin Brown, another dead-weight
pitcher who also was always hurt.

It's now two weeks and counting since Pavano got Yankee eyes rolling with his
latest boo-boo, a sore butt that continues to keep him off the mound and out
of sight. Meanwhile, as Pavano heals in Tampa - while standing, we presume -
the Yankees are hoping to score enough runs to hold off the frightening
Kansas City Royals.

The Yankees needed a three-run homer in the eighth from Derek Jeter in the
home opener Tuesday to rally for a 9-7 win, then another big offensive
performance yesterday to win, 12-5. Shawn Chacon, like Chien-Ming Wang the
day before, was shaky against a low-budget KC team that can't carry Alex
Rodriguez's paycheck. After 21 pitches, Chacon trailed 3-0 and needed a visit
from pitching coach Ron Guidry.

"The offense's performance was better than mine," Chacon said. "I made a
couple of bad pitches. Some got away from me. I just tried to keep us in the

This was the second straight start Chacon was pounded early, meaning this
isn't 2005 anymore. You remember last season. Chacon was a big factor after
arriving from Colorado at midseason. The struggling Yankees suddenly came
alive, were 9-3 in games he started and stole a division title with a strong
finish. Chacon and Wang and Aaron Small, three nobodies who weren't even in
the mix when the season began, spared the Yankees from shame and may have
even saved the jobs of manager Joe Torre and GM Brian Cashman. They pitched
over their heads and gave the rotation the life it needed.

But it's a new year and the jig is up, unless you really believe Chacon, Wang
and Small will do that again.

If anything, the Yankees are finally supposed to get good stuff this year
from Pavano and, to a lesser extent, Jaret Wright. The Yankees bought them
for $61 million two offseasons ago with the understanding they'd be second
and third in the rotation right now and would reduce the burden on Randy
Johnson and Mike Mussina.

Instead, the Yankees would dump these two slugs if they could.

They're a pair of expensive mistakes, so far anyway, and haven't done
anything to make the Yankees believe that will change. As forgettable as they
were last season, when they combined to miss roughly five months and win nine
games, the Yankees didn't suffer, only because of Chacon, Wang and Small.
Those three bought Pavano and Wright some time. Well, that time is now, and
yet Pavano remains in Tampa while Wright was pounded by Oakland in his first
outing.

The Yankees can survive Wright because they can buy out his contract this
fall. Not so with Pavano. His four-year, $39.95-million deal was an oversight
by Cashman. You have to wonder what the GM saw in a player who had a career
57-58 record when he signed. Pavano went 6-0 during a two-month stretch in
his final season with the Marlins, the extent of his brilliance. Too bad
Cashman was blinded by that. Instead, the pitcher to get from the
penny-pinching Marlins was Josh Beckett, who famously shut down
the Yankees in the 2003 World Series and is now off to a sizzling start for
the arch-enemy Red Sox.
洋基現在之所以還留著Wright  是因為今年秋天就可以買斷他的合約
但Pavano不一樣  現金人超凱付他四年3.995千萬
就是被他在馬林魚隊最後兩個月6勝0敗的表現所矇蔽
另一位離開小氣鬼馬林魚隊的投手是Josh Beckett
他以2003世界大賽中封鎖洋基而聞名 現在則投效死對頭紅襪隊

Pavano? He took a line drive to the head last season, then developed a sore
rotator cuff, then a creaky back and now, a painful butt, suffered in his
first spring-training game. When healthy, his pitching was nothing special,
and therefore it's no surprise he carries little respect in a clubhouse that
frowns upon big-money, useless players.

健康的時候 他的投球就沒什麼特別  以他花大錢沒什麼用的表現來說
也難怪在球員俱樂部中得不到什麼尊敬

There's a place in the storied clubhouse for players like him, and when
Pavano finds it, he might see Kevin Brown's ratty old socks sitting there.
喔 球員俱樂部裡還是有個位置容納像他這樣的球員
當Pavano找到後 可能會看到Kevin Brown破舊的襪子正躺在那兒呢
