Pavano and Wright May Play Musical Chairs in Rotation
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: August 27, 2006
ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 26 — The Yankees wanted a younger rotation when
they signed Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano to free-agent contracts before
last season. Neither has pitched to his previous level of success, but
Wright, at least, has pitched.
Pavano has been nursing injuries since June of last year, with maladies
ranging from shoulder to back to buttocks to elbow.
Now that Pavano may be ready to return, Wright’s spot is in jeopardy.
A day after Wright’s poor start in Friday’s loss at Angel Stadium,
Manager Joe Torre still would not commit himself to giving Wright another
start.
Pavano also started Friday, working six innings for Class AAA Columbus,
and he could be activated to pitch in Wright’s place against Detroit on
Thursday.
“I haven’t thought about that at all,” Wright said, and Torre echoed
him. But Torre acknowledged that he had not yet heard from General
Manager Brian Cashman with a report on Pavano’s progress.
In his last four games (two starts and two relief outings), Wright is 0-2
with a 10.38 earned run average. In eight and two-thirds innings, he has
allowed 14 hits and 7 walks. In keeping with their style, the Angels
forced Wright to throw 92 pitches in only three and two-thirds innings on
Friday.
“You try to put someone away, and it’s kind of like your typical Bobby
Abreu at-bat: you’re ahead in the count, and the next thing you know,
it’s 3-2 and you’ve thrown 9 or 10 pitches to the guy,” Wright said.
“But I still need to make better pitches early in the count.”
Torre admires Wright’s competitiveness, but he seems to have grown weary
of watching him run high pitch counts.
And if Pavano is ready, the Yankees would obviously want to see a return
on their $39.95 million investment in him.
Pavano is signed through 2008, and Wright can become a free agent after
this season if the Yankees exercise a $4 million buyout. If they choose
to keep Wright, they would pay him $7 million next season.
A VISIT FROM A FRIEND
Joe Torre has been friendly with John Wooden since his days as an
Angels broadcaster in the 1980’s. Torre even carries a card with Wooden’s
“Pyramid of Success” in his wallet.
But Torre was still surprised last October when Wooden, the renowned
former basketball coach for U.C.L.A., called him after he decided to
stay with the Yankees.
“It came from left field,” Torre said. “I was very touched by that.”
Wooden, who visited the Yankees’ clubhouse Saturday, said he thought
Torre did the right thing by returning.
He praised Torre and Angels Manager Mike Scioscia, comparing their
calm demeanor to that of Walter Alston, the Hall of Fame manager of
the Dodgers.
“They accept the ups and downs, never get too carried away,” Wooden said.
“They’ll have their spots here and there, which is natural and normal.
I just like their demeanor.”
Wooden offered support for Alex Rodriguez, engaged Johnny Damon and
Mike Mussina in conversation and spoke highly of Derek Jeter.
“I think he’s the consummate professional,” Wooden said. “He accepts
things very well. I’ve always felt the strength of a person’s character
is their ability to accept both success and failure, without letting either
one affect you. I’ve watched, and he’s done that. He’s a great competitor
and he can make big plays for you, but his demeanor is always the same.”
Wooden was born Oct. 14, 1910, two days after the reported birth date of
Bob Sheppard, the Yankees’ public-address announcer.
A MINOR PROBLEM
Hideki Matsui took two sets of 30 swings off a tee Saturday. His interpreter,
Roger Kahlon, said Matsui hoped to soft toss Sunday.
Joe Torre wants Matsui to play in the minor leagues before rejoining
the Yankees, but Class AAA Columbus ends its regular season Sept. 4, and
only one affiliate, the rookie-level Staten Island Yankees, plays later
than that.
