Right-hander has to deal with problem in right rib cage

ANAHEIM -- Just when it looked like Carl Pavano was ready to return to the
Yankees, the right-hander has been hit with yet another setback, leaving his
status in limbo.

正當看起來似乎Carl Pavano準備歸隊之時,這名右投手又有病痛復發,將他推入困境.

Pavano is battling a slight strain on the right side of his rib cage, just
under his arm. He pitched six innings for Triple-A Columbus on Friday night,
pronouncing himself ready to return to the Yankees following the start.

Sunday, Yankees manager Joe Torre revealed that Pavano has been battling this
rib-cage issue since before his last outing. Torre said that the injury is not
considered serious, but Pavano will be checked out by a doctor on Monday.

"He's got a little something going on," Torre said. "He doesn't seem to be
concerned. Evidently, he's had this since before he pitched. It seems to be

Pavano is still scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday, and his next
start remains set for later this week. Torre said that it has not been

Pavano has not pitched for the Yankees since June 27, 2005, missing the past
14 months with injuries to his shoulder, back, buttocks and elbow. He
underwent surgery to remove a bone chip above his elbow in May.

This latest setback stirred some emotion in the Yankees' clubhouse on Sunday,
as several players -- none of whom wished to be identified -- questioned
Pavano's desire to return at all.

It was believed that the Yankees were planning to insert Pavano in Jaret
Wright's spot in the rotation, which would have had him on the mound at Yankee
Stadium on Thursday against the Tigers. Now, it's anybody's guess when Pavano
will return.

原本被認為 Pavano會取代Wright在星期四先發面對來訪的老虎隊,但現在沒有人知道
Pavano何時會歸隊.

"It became one of those things where it took the air out of the balloon again,"
Torre said. "Everything seemed to be going well, even though you know what the
history has been."


Working it out?
Alex Rodriguez took an extra 45 minutes of batting practice after Saturday's
game in Anaheim, and he sat in front of a computer watching video for most of
the morning on Sunday, as he tries to work his way out of another slump.

A-Rod went 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts in the first two games of the Angels
series, prompting him to take Don Mattingly for an extra hitting session on
Saturday afternoon.

"Sometimes, if fatigue is a part of it, then working can be counterproductive,"
Torre said. "In his case, he's trying to find that comfort, get in that
batter's box and not feel like it's a foreign place to be. He doesn't look
comfortable."

Torre batted Rodriguez in the No. 2 hole on Saturday, and he had planned to hit
him fifth on Sunday before some late lineup changes moved A-Rod back to the
cleanup spot.

"I thought about sitting him today," Torre said. "Maybe if it was a
right-hander, I may have considered it. With a left-hander, I decided to give
it today. We have an off-day [Monday], so we'll see what we do


A-Rod在星期六的比賽後,又做了45分鐘的打擊練習;星期天的早上也花了許多時間觀看錄影

Giambi sits:
Jason Giambi, who left Saturday's game with cramps in his arms, legs and hands,
was not in the lineup on Sunday, though he said he was available to play.

Giambi spent Saturday night at his parents' house in Southern California,
getting some rest and keeping himself hydrated.

"I feel good," Giambi said. "I feel a little tight from being contracted, but
I'll do whatever Joe needs me to do."

Torre said he would prefer to use Giambi as a pinch-hitter and keep him in the
game instead of starting him and having to remove him.


Giambi has been battling some minor injuries, most notably a tight left
hamstring, for the past couple of weeks. On the road trip, he is 9-for-25
(.360) with two homers and 10 RBIs in nine games.

"So far, I've still been able to contribute," Giambi said. "That's the biggest
thing for me; you can play with nagging injuries, but if you're not
contributing, you have to take time off. If I'm not helping the team, give me a
few days rest."


Giambi星期六因抽筋而提早離開球場,星期天未列入先發名單,但Giambi表示他感覺很好,
Torre表示,他寧願讓大吉代打,而不願讓他先發而必須提早離場.
在客場征戰的9場比賽中,大吉有 .360的打擊率.2支全壘打及10分打點.

Another step:
Hideki Matsui did some soft-toss hitting drills in the cage on Sunday, taking
the next step in his rehab from wrist surgery.

"I feel good," Matsui said.

Matsui may see the doctor later this week, at which time he hopes to be cleared
to take full batting practice.

"The trainers and the doctors are the ones who will decide that," Matsui said,
through his interpreter.

Matsui這禮拜會接受醫生的檢查,他希望能被允許完全的打擊練習.




Melky scratched:
Melky Cabrera was scratched from Sunday's lineup because of a tooth problem,
having gone for an emergency dentist appointment after Saturday's game.

"He had some puffiness going on," Torre said. "There will be some future root
canal stuff in his plans. He's really uncomfortable."

Cabrera could pinch-hit on Sunday, but Torre had no plans to use him in the
field.

The Yankees are off Monday for the first time in three weeks, as they prepare
to open a six-game homestand against the Tigers and Twins. In Tuesday's opener,
 New York sends Chien-Ming Wang to the mound against Detroit's Nate Robertson.
