It's official: Pavano is a pain BY SAM BORDEN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER ANAHEIM - Carl Pavano's disastrous tenure as a Yankee hit another low this weekend and the club's frustration with the oft-injured righthander may be at an all-time high. Here's the latest twist: Pavano was near the end of his rehab from surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow and originally was scheduled to make two starts for Triple-A Columbus. With the Bombers' rotation struggling, however, the Yankees were planning to have Pavano start Thursday in place of Jaret Wright, according to sources, assuming his Friday outing for the Clippers went fine. After finishing the game - in which he allowed two runs in six innings - Pavano seemed okay, sources said. About 20 minutes after Columbus manager Dave Miley informed Pavano of the Yankees' plans, however, he mentioned that he had been feeling some pain in the lower chest and oblique area on his right side, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Now, it's unclear - again - when he'll be able to pitch. "He's scared stiff," one Yankee official said. GM Brian Cashman did not return calls for a second consecutive day yesterday. Joe Torre said the Yankees were going to have Pavano "checked out" today but are still planning on him throwing a side session; sources said the Yankees were trying to gauge the intensity of Pavano's latest condition and determine whether it's actually debilitating enough to keep him from finally making his season debut. This much is clear: The Yanks' patience with Pavano has been severely tested. As Pavano's saga has dragged on, his credibility in the Yankees clubhouse certainly appears to have suffered; each setback for Pavano is met with a collective dose of sarcastic shock among his teammates, and several players have questioned whether the former Marlin is even interested in pitching again. Torre defended the pitcher, but admitted that when he first heard news of Pavano's complaint, "it becomes one of those things where you take the air out of the balloon again." He added that, "It's frustrating for us, but I'm sure it's the same for him." Pavano signed a four-year, $39.95 million contract before last season. He hurt his back during spring training that year and made only 17 starts before being shut down for the season with rotator cuff tendinitis. Then during spring training of this season, back problems plagued Pavano and, during the one game he pitched in, he fell covering first base and suffered bruised buttocks. While rehabbing from those injuries, elbow pain forced him from a start from Double-A Trenton and he had the bone chip removal in May. The last time he pitched in the majors was June 27, 2005.
