With each physical setback, that feeling grows. Pavano may start this week for the Yankees. But no one around the team will believe it until it happens. Just as he was becoming close to finally returning, Pavano has another injury issue clouding his immediate future. “It becomes one of those things where you take the air out of the balloon a little bit,” Manager Joe Torre said, “because you know what his history has been.” Torre said that the struggling Jaret Wright was on schedule to pitch Thursday against the Detroit Tigers. That would be six days after Pavano’s last start, a six-inning performance for Class AAA Columbus on Friday. Pavano said after that game that he was ready to return to the Yankees; he has not pitched for them since June 27, 2005. But while icing his arm after the game, according to Torre, Pavano felt discomfort in a muscle near his rib cage, under his right arm. “They don’t think it’s an issue,” Torre said. “They will get it checked out tomorrow just in case it is an issue, but they’re still planning to have him work a side tomorrow. He’s still scheduled for his next start; it hasn’ t been determined whether it’s going to be for Columbus or us.” Torre was vague on other specifics, and for the second day in a row, General Manager Brian Cashman did not return a call seeking comment on Pavano. Cashman said through a spokesman that Pavano would remain with Columbus for his bullpen session, adding that he did not consider this a big deal. It could be that Cashman has grown weary of defending Pavano, whom he signed to a four-year, $39.95 million contract after the 2004 season. Pavano had finished 18-8 for Florida, and several other teams also wanted him. Pavano chose the Yankees and later fired his agent, and he has never seemed comfortable. He has had injuries to his shoulder, back, buttocks and elbow, from which a bone chip was removed May 25. “It’s frustrating for us,” Torre said, “but I’m sure it’s the same for him, if not more so.” That point may be debated in the clubhouse, where Pavano seems to have no defenders among the players, who stopped counting on him long ago. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 24.31.188.175
