CAR WRECK & TRAIN WRECK
PAVANO HID PORSCHE ACCIDENT FROM BOMBERS
By GEORGE KING
August 29, 2006 -- Add Carl Pavano's head to the list of body parts that
don't work well and his stupidity could result in the oft-injured pitcher
being fined for hiding an injury.
Two weeks after injuring his torso in a car accident in which he said his
Porsche collided with a truck on a rain-slicked road in West Palm Beach,
Pavano finally informed the club he was suffering from discomfort in the
right rib cage area.
The accident happened in the morning of the night he made a minor-league
rehab start for Tampa (Single-A) against Brevard on Aug. 15.
He continued to pitch in the minors, but in the fourth inning of a six-inning
outing for Columbus (Triple-A) Friday night he decided he needed medical
assistance.
"At that point I needed treatment,'' Pavano said when asked why he waited
so long to divulge he had a problem.
An exam yesterday in Columbus unearthed two non-displaced fractured ribs.
Pavano will be examined again today and, if he is cleared, start for the
Clippers tomorrow night.
However, even if Pavano is able to pitch for the Clippers and then the
Yankees next month in any role, the issue is far from over for the $40
million bust, who has turned into the punchline of multiple clubhouse jokes.
Brian Cashman has put up with a lot from Pavano, who hasn't pitched in a
big league game since last June due to shoulder, back, buttock and elbow
problems. However, the GM is disturbed about Pavano hiding an injury from
him.
"I am still in the process of gathering information,'' Cashman said when
asked if he would fine the 30-year-old Pavano.
Clearly, Cashman is annoyed that Pavano would withhold information as
serious as being injured in a car wreck. Pavano said he wasn't charged
with any traffic violations.
"I don't want people holding back information,'' Cashman said. "It's more
than he thought, but we can't help somebody if they won't help themselves.
It's as simple as that.''
Pavano expressed remorse for not being honest with the team and said the
whole thing is his fault but didn't guarantee he will make it back to the
big leagues this year.
This is the second of a four-year contract that if the Yankees had a
mulligan on, they would certainly take it and let somebody else sign
the immature starting pitcher., who is 184-166 with a 4.27 ERA in 10
major-league seasons.
"It's all about tolerance,'' said Pavano, whose pain threshold has been
joked about in the Yankee universe from The Bronx to Tampa and every
stop in between. "I don't think it's going to be something that will
hold me back.''
Yet, there is always a big but with Pavano.
"But if I feel it's something that will jeopardize my arm, or the team,
or winning, obviously those are the things I have to take into account.
I can't be selfish and think I have to go out there and prove to the
world and prove I can pitch through this. If it's holding me back and
hurting the team I definitely have to be smart about it.''
When he went on the DL last year with a shoulder injury that didn't need
surgery, whispers surfaced he didn't want to earn his money.
They grew louder at the start of spring training when he arrived with a
balky back.
In the last week of camp he suffered a bruised buttock falling down at
first base although there were hints that wasn't the cause of the injury.
In May, he underwent surgery to remove one bone chip from the right elbow.
Now, his ribs are broken.
