Plenty of questions abound about Yankees 2007 starters

NEW YORK -- General manager Brian Cashman acknowledges that the Yankees'
starting rotation will create its fair share of concerns this year. In fact,
on one recent occasion, he even volunteered to reel them off.

Sitting on a metal folding chair in a room beneath Yankee Stadium, Cashman
removed his suit jacket, settling in for an informal chat with reporters.
But he also shed any illusions about an impenetrable starting five.

translate to the States?

cultivate as much on the farm as we possibly can, to support the adjustments
that are always necessary as you transition your pitching staff."

With Randy Johnson and Jaret Wright shipped to different teams via trades,
and Pettitte and Igawa inserted as free agents, the Yankees' rotation will
take on a different look for 2007.

The changes place added importance on Chien-Ming Wang's ability to return to
his role as the staff ace. Wang, who will turn 27 before Opening Day, led
the Yankees with a 19-6 record in 34 games (33 starts) last season,
compiling a 3.63 ERA.

After a standout season that saw him rank among the American League leaders

Wang's good control and ability to induce ground balls will play a key role
in his success, allowing the Yankees infield to work behind him. Though Wang
recorded just 76 strikeouts last season, he induced ground balls at a
3.06-to-1 ratio, the best in the league.

As shortstop Derek Jeter noted late last season, "He's come up big for us.
We just want him to continue what he's been doing, not try to change

The return of Pettitte gives the Yankees another familiar face in the
rotation, as the lanky lefty comes back to the Bronx after three seasons
with the Houston Astros.

Pettitte, 34, was 14-13 with a 4.20 ERA in 36 games (35 starts) for the
Astros in 2006. He has pitched more than 200 innings in each of the past two
seasons for Houston, and believes that his durability has returned to its
pre-2004 form.

Pettitte's left elbow was a source of concern after the 2003 season, when
Cashman admitted the Yankees didn't exhibit the best "bedside manner" with
the free-agent-to-be. Pettitte later required surgery and missed most of his
first year in Houston.

Now blocking any such thoughts from his mind, Pettitte believes he is back
to the form he had when he left the Bronx. Pettitte said he knows just why
he'll be on the mound in pinstripes again, the brim of his cap rammed

One of the returning faces never strongly entertained leaving. Mussina, 38,
came back to the Yankees after a brief negotiation process in which the club
signed the right-hander through 2008 for $23 million.

Mussina was 15-7 with a 3.51 ERA in 32 starts for New York in '06, and he
provides a mark of expected stability, considering the more uncertain back
end of the rotation.

Since joining the Yankees in 2001 as a free agent, Mussina has compiled a

asking this spring. Earlier this month, the Yankees announced the signing of
Igawa, a 27-year-old Japanese left-hander, inking the former Hanshin Tiger
to a five-year, $20 million contract following a $26 million posting bid.

A three-time strikeout leader in Japan's Central League, Igawa is certain to

regular season, based simply upon the coincidence of their rookie seasons
for heated rivals in the AL East.

But the Yankees are quick to caution that Igawa -- who was 14-9 with a 2.97
ERA and 194 strikeouts last year for Hanshin -- is a dissimilar pitcher to
the projected Boston ace.

"We've had some looks on him for the last couple of years, and he's not

sooner than later."

The Yankees are also banking that they will finally receive a productive
season from Pavano, who has given the team just four Major League victories
since signing a four-year, $39.95 million contract after the 2004 season.

Pavano, 31, missed all of last season with various injuries -- including a
pair of broken ribs suffered in an August automobile accident -- and has not

noting that Pavano is "going into the mix ready to go."

The possibility exists, of course, for the starting rotation to experience a
drastic age shift during the season.

While young prospects like Philip Hughes, Humberto Sanchez and Tyler
Clippard could see time in New York this season, there's also the chance
that the rotation could get a bit older by adding Roger Clemens.

The Yankees have said that if and when Clemens decides he wants to pitch in
2007, they wish to speak with him. Clemens has not yet done so, but it is
assumed that he would pitch only for the Yankees, Astros or Red Sox.

但老克還沒決定  不過他如果要登板的話 可能只限於洋基 太空人 或紅襪
