Farnsworth falters as Yankees fall
With Rivera unavailable, former Tiger gives up lead in ninth

DETROIT -- The Yankees were two outs away from finishing off a four-game sweep
 of the Tigers, but New York found out what life without Mariano Rivera can be
 like -- and it wasn't good.
底特律--洋基只差兩出局就可以在這系列賽中橫掃老虎，但是洋基發現若沒有Mariano
Rivera，生活會是什麼樣子-- 那不會是一件好事。

With Rivera unavailable to pitch in the one-run game after suffering back
spasms earlier in the day, Kyle Farnsworth was called on to close out the win
 against his former team. 
Rivera在今天稍早時因為背部痙攣，而無法在這場一分差的比賽中上場投球。
Kyle Farnsworth奉命要為他的球隊留住勝利。

"Was I glad he wasn't coming out there? Absolutely," said Tigers manager Jim
Leyland of Rivera. "There were probably about 25 guys on my bench who were
glad, too."

"We do take Mo for granted," said manager Joe Torre. "Taking nothing away from
 Farnsy, but that's not his job. His job is as a setup man; it's a whole
different ballgame to come into a one-run ballgame and do what Mo does."

That was certainly the case on Thursday, as Farnsworth fell apart in the ninth.
The right-hander allowed two runs on a walk and three hits, the last of which
was Carlos Guillen's walkoff RBI single, sealing the 7-6 win for Detroit.

"It was terrible," Farnsworth said. "It's uncalled for, what I did. My job is

"We got to see what happened tonight without Mo," Johnny Damon said. "But we

The loss was the first for the Yankees in a game they led by at least five runs
 since July 24, 2004, against Boston. The Yankees are now a half-game behind
the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.

Despite the heart-breaking loss, the Yankees took three of four from the
Tigers, shutting them out twice. New York has won seven of its last nine games.

"We're not pleased, because you get a little greedy when you win the first

Chien-Ming Wang, a winner in four of his last five starts, allowed five runs
in four-plus innings.

"It didn't look like he attacked the strike zone tonight," Torre said. "He was
 pitching, but it didn't look like he was trusting it."

The Yankees jumped on rookie Justin Verlander, who entered the game with a
7-3 record and 2.55 ERA. New York scored a run in the second on Andy
Phillips' RBI double, then added four runs in the second, three of them on
Jorge Posada's bases-loaded double.

With a 5-0 lead, Wang gave back three runs in the fourth, as the first five
Tigers reached base in the inning. Jason Giambi's solo home run in the fifth
 boosted the lead back to three runs, but Detroit loaded the bases against
Wang with no outs in the fifth, ending Wang's day as Torre turned to Darrell
 Rasner, making his first appearance for the Yankees.

But the young right-hander retired the next three hitters, preserving the
Yankees' lead.

Verlander left the game after giving up six runs in five innings. The rookie

Once the starters departed, the bullpens took control of the game. Jamie
Walker, Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney combined to throw four scoreless
innings for the Tigers, while Rasner, Mike Myers and Scott Proctor threw four
 scoreless frames for the Yankees.

As the game moved to the bottom of the ninth, it was Farnsworth, not Rivera,
 strolling in from the bullpen to try for the save. Ordonez saw that Rivera
 wasn't going to be on the mound in the ninth, which was a welcome sight.
九局下半，Farnsworth上場試著留下勝利，而不是Rivera。Ordonez發現第九局站在投手
丘上的不是Rivera，顯得很高興。

"We have a chance to win the ballgame," Ordonez said he thought to himself.

"I have all the respect in the world for Farnsworth," Leyland said. "He was one
 of their own here last year, and he's nasty. But when you're talking about
Mariano Rivera, you're talking about one of a kind, in my opinion."

Farnsworth issued a one-out walk to Marcus Thames in the ninth, then served up
 a single to Ivan Rodriguez, putting the tying and winning runs on base.

Ordonez singled in Thames, tying the game. Farnsworth then fell behind Guillen,
 3-1, and one pitch later, Guillen ended the game with his RBI single to right,
 bringing Pudge home for the game-winner.

"It was tough, knowing it's my job out there," Rivera said. "Kyle was trying
 his best, he just fell short."

"It looked like he tried to make some pitches and got himself in some trouble
 counts," Torre said. "We got to where we wanted to get, we just couldn't hold
 on to it."

到了我們想要到的地方，但我們沒把握住。」
